What to expect..Triple Bypass
Hi All, I am a 44 year old man and have had a heart cath a few days ago and was told I needed a triple bypass. I have had a Pancreas and Kidney transplant in 4/2002 and all is very good with that. I was slowly gaining weight and was easily tired when walking etc. So,,,,after several years of Docs suggesting the weight was the problem I am at a triple bypass surgery. I am curious/concerned about what to expect after surgery.ie,,pain, length of tubes, tests etc Thanmks Biggie
hello biggie, i am a pretty straight forward kinda of person and i dont pull peoples legs or what ever when i tell them things so i dont candy coat anything first off your doctors will have to give the ok for the surger after your other surgerys. as far as tubes and stuff if all goes well they should be removed with in a day or so they are just drainage tubes to let the fluid and excess blood that is in your body. as far as pain your gonna hurt for a while. get a good pillow something that you can hold to your chest when you cough. the firmer the better. it just helps keep you from hurting your self and keeps the pain down. pain should go away prob in a month it gets easier and easier every day as far as pain. just make sure to follow you doctors orders and dont try to do to much till your body heals. you will have to go back in about a month for a check up and exrays. if you smoke throw them away. they lesson your lung capacity and will make healing slower take your energy. walk as much as your body will let you. it is better to take a short walk in morning and one in evening or is what is working for me. i had a bad time with mine but they had to reopen me and leave me open for a day. my surgery was on like jan 17th or 18th was in for 12 days and then at daughters for another week since i live alone. this is my second surgery i have the gene that makes to much cholestrol. my first surgery in 2000 on jan 21 went easy and was cut loose in four days i asked to be kelp an extra day. like i said above i live by my self so i had no help but i got along fine. when you go in go in with a good state of mind that every thing is going to be ok and fine. your attitude is going to make alot of difference about the surgery and recovery. if possible give yourself plenty of time to heal. my first one i thought i was go to go about 2 months after surgery and i broke my sternim apart. you need a good 5 to 6 months to heal and get back to your old self. good luck bud and i, we shall be praying for your speedy recovery. biggie45692000 <biggie45692000@... Hello, Your comment about breaking your sternum after 2 months was appreciated. My surgeon told me last visit at 5 wks or before, that I was totally healed inside. I knew it was a crock of bull with being diabetic especially, and the fact that my chest incision is still not healed and open (infected) in one area still at 8 wks. I coughed hard once in the first week home, and felt something move, after that I've had this area that opened up and has been treated with antibiotics and ointments through other Dr's. Surgeon said two times there is no infection, hah! He called it "dry socket"..as in teeth! I applaud for you for being home alone. I have my boyfriend who has done all the shopping, laundry, etc. I have no idea how you've been making it alone! In awe.. Lor when you go in go in with a good state of mind that every thing is going to be ok and fine. your attitude is going to make alot of difference about the surgery and recovery. if possible give yourself plenty of time to heal. my first one i thought i was go to go about 2 months after surgery and i broke my sternim apart. you need a good 5 to 6 months to heal and get back to your old self. good luck bud and i, we shall be praying for your speedy recovery
hi lor, first if you are still experencing this kind of problem i would be looking for another doctor. if you are having this much problem a second look by another doctor would be first on my list. there is no shame or disrespect for the doctor that is treating you but your main consern is getting well. i know with diabetic you are going to heal slower than any one that isnt. my advice is to go get an e-ray they can see if it is broke. mine now doesnt move but my surgern use some kind of braided wire. when he got me stable and every thing he said bet you dont break this one this time, he has a good since of humor.when i had an e-ray i looked and asked the doc why are there wires broke and why is this one down by my kidney and lung? he said you broke your chest apart and this was just my reg doc [he is really a good doctor i go to him before going to any other]. i broke my sternum but it was after the incision had healed. i was told several reasons like infection and stuff but i think i broke mine trying to jump into life to fast. my dad lives in front of me on the farm, at age 85 now and is very demanding. he would see me outside doing a little something and would say hey i need this or that and it was really more than i should of done. if i said anything he would say well i will do it. some times i wish that i had let him. and i tried to go back to work to soon. so i blame myself and no other. i have had 11 major surgerys since 75' and i dont think i have ever had the chance to recover like they said. not even this one. last friday my daughter was in a small porche and the guy got mad and he rolled it. she is fine few busted ribs and such but i am her dad and she comes first. i read in a post i guess some one died while in surgery. i crashed 3 hours after surgery. they ripped me open and massaged my heart and looked for a blood clot. my doc said there was no medicial reason for me to of crashed. the 4 1/2 mins or so i think i will keep to myself. i think i crashed my self. i was gone for like 4 1/2 mins or so is best i can learn. doc said not many go like me and come back. he said some one kicked me back. so i guess wasnt my time. all i experenced was the panic attacks, not being able to sleep, hypo tension that kind of stuff. for all that the nurses and docs and people said meant nothing it didnt help. then my daughter came in and told me dad it wasnt your time you still have stuff to do here. maybe she was right and i know that God can have me any time he chooses. i do know that life means a lot more to me than it used to be. if i had known i was gonna live this long i would of taken care of myself better. no one is 6 feet tall and bullet proof. again sorry so long.
Hi, I'm sorry I didn't catch your name on this post. Thank you for the sharing and info. Rushing recovery works out for some folks, but not for all of us. So many factors on that. 11 surgeries is something! Work always puts pressure on coming back, in some cases, too early. Your daughter sounds like a gem. Who was angry, the person driving? Glad that she just had some banged up ribs. They take a long time to heal, though..the ribs don't have a great blood supply. I had a small rib fracture once and it took 4 months for all pain to leave. Yes, it sure sounds like you were kicked back alright. I had a cardiac arrest almost 3 yrs ago in April, gone for over 8 minutes. They were about to give up, in front of my daughter. Pretty traumatic for her. She is everything to me also...and is due to have a baby in a week, her first. Unfortunately, she lives pretty far from me, but plans to come with her hubby and baby at the end of March for 2 wks. It'll be close to a year since I've seen her. If I don't heal up pretty soon, I will have to go to a different clinic system, but I'm pretty limited on who takes my insurance..so I'm stuck with what I have..my GP is better than the surgeon was. I see a new cardiologist for the first time tomorrow, finally almost 8 wks after bypass. Take care! hey lor, i am just plain ron [from texas] at least is what most call me. yeah it was old boy friend offered to take her to to car and ended up 15 miles from it. she is like me, if at all possible she wont let anything get her down long, but i think this is going to take awhile she finds new aches and pains every day. the good news is she is listening to me and called a good lawyer. he is going to make sure she doesnt get taken and make sure she gets her doc bills paid. sorry to hear about your cardiac arrest, not much fun. wish you could go to your daughters would prob make both of yall feel better if not pain wise but attitude. i hope the baby and her come through fine, but i am sure they will. i have medicare and that is it and so far i can go to who ever i want. my daughter told the heart surgern as he had his hand inside me to not let my daddy die. maybe i heard that and she told me to hang on so maybe some how i heard her and fought to get back for her. i really dont know, just glad i did. life is alot different after that kind of experence. a year is a long time not to get to see your daughter. i hope the visit goes well and you are better so you can enjoy your grand baby. i have two and both are totaly different. one is 15 so them dang hormones is messing with her and other one is 12 she is grandpa's baby and always will be. her mom said maybe in year or so she not be so cranky. i told her well that is the time when they just run off instead of talking back. well i sure hope you get better. i am out now for like almost three weeks from hospital and feeling good but i am not going to rush this one. i went back to the hospital today just to see if any one of the nurses was there most were and they all remembered me and we hugged and shook hands like old friends. they said they couldnt believe it was me. said i had good color and looked good. as usual i talk to much. take care and if i can help you or you just want to talk i am here.
Hi Ron, Nice to meet you. Sounds like your daughter had a rough experience, reading through the lines here.I hope she gets her medical bills paid and what she is entitled to! Yes, she will have aches and pains that come and go with rib fractures. You sound like you're doing so excellent after only 3 weeks postop. I can hardly believe that you were already up to the hospital to visit with the nurses. That's really neat. I'm rather ashamed of myself that I'm still not driving or feeling good enough to go anywhere other than Dr appts. Saw a resident cardiologist the other day who gave me another antibiotic for my incision, which is the third bout of antibiotics now. They want me to have a chemically induced stress test, so I have an appt for Mar 20th and see the cardiologist one more time and then she's graduating and moving to a different hospital. Just met her! They told me I could start walking on the treadmill at our apt complex here, as I can't afford cardiac rehab. My insurance expects me to pay $3000. They don't want me to do a walking treadmill cardiac test, however, so go figure! It's a 4-6 hr test, which I've had once before. Well, I guess each of our recoveries is different. My diabetes leads to poor recovery, and I was anemic in the hospital and had a lot of issues with potassium, calcium, and hemoglobin levels. I experience a lot of pain yet and going in a car to and from the hospital on wintry, bumpy roads, really sets my pain off. I haven't recovered from that trip there yet. I sure hope I'll feel well enough to ride over 4 hrs up north when my daughter and family fly up, for our stay up there. Another month may improve my condition. I hear you very well on the moods of teenage girls. Sure remember those days from my daughter. Can be a really difficult time. You just hang in there and know they eventually change as they mature. Take care, Lor hey lor, i am just plain ron [from texas] at least is what most call me. yeah it was old boy friend offered to take her to to car and ended up 15 miles from it. she is like me, if at all possible she wont let anything get her down long, but i think this is going to take awhile she finds new aches and pains every day. the good news is she is listening to me and called a good lawyer. he is going to make sure she doesnt get taken and make sure she gets her doc bills paid. sorry to hear about your cardiac arrest, not much fun. wish you could go to your daughters would prob make both of yall feel better if not pain wise but attitude. i hope the baby and her come through fine, but i am sure they will. i have medicare and that is it and so far i can go to who ever i want. my daughter told the heart surgern as he had his hand inside me to not let my daddy die. maybe i heard that and she told me to hang on so maybe some how i heard her and fought to get back for her. i really dont know, just glad i did. life is alot different after that kind of experence. a year is a long time not to get to see your daughter. i hope the visit goes well and you are better so you can enjoy your grand baby. i have two and both are totaly different. one is 15 so them dang hormones is messing with her and other one is 12 she is grandpa's baby and always will be. her mom said maybe in year or so she not be so cranky. i told her well that is the time when they just run off instead of talking back. well i sure hope you get better. i am out now for like almost three weeks from hospital and feeling good but i am not going to rush this one. i went back to the hospital today just to see if any one of the nurses was there most were and they all remembered me and we hugged and shook hands like old friends. they said they couldnt believe it was me. said i had good color and looked good. as usual i talk to much. take care and if i can help you or you just want to talk i am here.
