What to do when you get a cold or flu
Now I have this cold, cough, runny nose, aching and generally feeling bad and I have coughed and sneezed so much my chest is sore to the touch. I tried Theraflu a couple of nights and my legs hurt so back I couldn't sleep. Do you think the flu or a cold is harder on someone who has had bypass surgery. I don't remember feeling this bad before with a cold. I wonder if some of my medicine may not like the cold medicine I am taking? Anyone else have experience with this. Ann

Anyone else have experience with this. Ann Ann, I have been instructed by my cardiologist that I cannot take any cough medicine that contains Pseudoephedrine! The ones I can use are Robitussin DM or some of the generic "Tussin DM". Just compare the label of the generic with the Robitussin DM and it will be identical plus its about 1/3 as expensive. Good luck and I hope you get over the cold. Chris
Thanks, I don't think I will be putting off that flu shot anymore either. Ann
Thanks Chris, I am feeling better and taking the robitussin for the cough. Ann
Hi Bravehearts, I'm feeling pretty good now - had my 3-by-pass surgery Dec 17, 1999. Thought my life was o-v-e-r...that is, if I lived ! Well, I slowly progressed to being able to walk - still get very winded easily. I had pneumonia and Congestive Heart Failure too - what took me to calling 911 was I had a terrible, terrible heart attack. (I've heard one re-coups better if you don't have heart attack(s).) I had another heart attack about a year after my surgery, and they thought I would need more surgery. But - didn't! However, only have 40% of my heart now that isn't scar tissue. That scares me so bad sometimes. Anyone else like that. Learned recently my uncle only had 20% of his heart working for years - that's inspiring me. Since then, I've been more careful about lifting, etc. When I read the question 'what do you do when you get a cold or flu," my first thought was Pray hard. I really try to stay away from anyone sick or coughing - and I keep some antibiotics on hand, but I do not take them often - can't do that. I always get a flu shot too. That's very important. I take 500mg Vit C, and a Vit E every day - if I feel "sick' as in cold-coming-on, I take 2 Vit C and buy Orange Juice and Cranberry juice - drink LOTS of water. Oh, some wonderful news to report. I met this guy......and we got married Sept 22, 2002, recently celebrated our first anniversary. Had 42 children in my wedding, had always told the kids if I got married, they could be in my wedding. It was so beautiful - one of my students, AJ played 'Love me Tender' on his clarinet...among other things, he's a biker. Well, was before his stroke. Now he's a Triker, and we ride the bike here and there - I never thought I'd be doing something like this. Yep, life is strange - you never know from one day to the next what's going to happen. My message to anyone who's afraid is - Don't ever give up! God's not through until it's over. hugs, maggie
