Hi - my mom had a triple bypass this summer. She had a really bad experience with her nurses (hard to say if it was real or if she was confused and paranoid due to surgery and medication) I can only say that nurses need to be EXTREMELY considerate to elderly patients in this condition. She was upset and anxious all the time in the hospital because the nurses just left her in her room - she had to get out of bed herself to go to the bathroom, they never cleaned her incision - when she got home her entire incision and under her breasts was all red and rashed. It took us weeks to make it better. Bye

I am certain this approach would provide an invaluable learning experience. I would fell privileged to be able to help someone learn!

This is not uncommon Don...it can take time for the leg to heal. I am assuming you are making sure the leg wound is not infected and just sore - you doc would be the best judge of that. When you are sitting/laying around are you keeping the leg raised...that usually helps. jon )

Good luck to you Nancy, I had bypass 11 months ago and no cancer (at least not yet) am 61 and even though I have chest, back and neck pain most of the time I can do just about anything I want. Walking, swimming, hiking and bicycle riding. It does seem like you are making a big difference in your man's life so just keep up what you are doing. I take lipitor , diovan for blood pressure, and an aspirin daily for my heart problems. I took lassix when I was on lopressor and was taken off both medications after one month. Hope things keep improving and hope Ray finds a good cardiologist in Georgia that will really look at his history and current condition. Ann

Hi Ann, I feel better already just touching base with someone who has gone through what Ray has been through. have another question. Why would he be put on high blood pressure meds when he has never had high blood pressure?? You'll probley think I'm crazy but for some reason I thought only men had bypass surgery. And now I have heard from you and I think Toni Ann? And I just herd from a friend "Ellen" is her name that they might have to do heart surgery on her. Next post I'll get you the name of the meds Ray is on. Toni Ann, I realize being a CNA years ago does not in any way qualifies me to ask Ray to stop his heart meds and I would never do that. At the same time 2 years ago my dog Icron had Perianel Fistula witch is like Chrons disease in humans. My first vet wanted to put him to sleep or cut off his tail. I got on the puter and found a support group and through research for months, hocking my home, and never quitting we finally found a vet at MSU that had tried Prednizone/Sulfasalazine treatment and it worked on a lot of the pups. I took the treatment to my new vet and with in days Icrons fistula's were healing. with in a few weeks they were no more. He was in remission for 2 years before DM took him and also my other GSD. I learned from this experience it doesn't take a rocket scientist to research and find out the side affects of any medication. I have learned what Lasix's can do to the body and that is why I wanted Ray to at least cut back. 80mg a day for over 2 years is a lot to be taking for this long a period of time. You are right when you said find a good cardiologist and have Ray checked out completely. And that is in the making. I have researched his other meds and the puzzle for me is the high blood pressure meds when he has never had high blood pressure. Bad side affects with this too. He has been back with me 4 weeks tomorrow and is so much stronger then when he first got here. He is not retaining fluids either on the lower dose of Lasix's. He has talked to me about how he felt before and after the surgery. At the time he said he couldn't really talk to anyone about it because he was with people that really didn't care. I just let him talk and I listen. I am on the Atkins diet and he does all the cooking and loves to cook. He kind of took it up as a hobby after the surgery when he couldn't do much. I'm telling you this so you know he is eating good foods. I don't want to push a lot of exsersize cause I haven't found out enough about open heart surgery and the recovery time and what you can do and can't do. His surgery was 21/2 years ago. The "red flag" that goes up is when he tolled me his last visite with the Dr was not his regular Dr and this Dr said just keep taking the meds your taking. And sometimes I know some Dr's will say that if your not their patient cause they don't want to rock the boat so to speak. So Toni Ann I guess your advice is the best and we will go get a good heart Dr and just get him checked out. Please let me know what you know about the heart surgery and the recovery time and all. I understand everyone is different. Would like to get a mans view on this too. What your fears are or were. How do you get over the fear of maybe having another heart attack etc. Are you more careful with your activity now? Hope I don't sound like a nut here. I just want to take care of my man the best I can. I just need to know more. Anyone have any sites I could research? I work so my time is limited on the puter now with Ray here. After 12 years alone it is some getting used to having someone here. I am truly blessed and I know it. Gotta get to bed work tomorrow. hugs nancy

Hi Nancy and welcome to the board, First of all if this were me I would get your man in asap to a cardiologist there in GA and get to the bottom of this quickly. Don't guess on this because you must have a baseline to go from when making medical decisions, especially on something as important as ones heart. God bless you both and I'm sure you'll get this under control soon. My x husband, soon to be husband again, had quadruple (sp?) by pass 21/2 years ago and then throat cancer witch he is in remission from. I had not seen Ray in 12 years. He is 68. He was always this 6"4" cowboy that could do everything and anything. We emailed for about 8 months (phone calls too) before he drove from Alaska to here in Ga. He tolled me all about the health problems he had had and he also said he wasn't as strong as he used to be. When he got here I wasn't home so he was out back by the pool. when he walked down the steps of the deck I was in shock as to the condition he was in. Corse he had just driven from Alaska to here. so I know that took a lot out of him. He was bent over and didn't walk strait up any more. It was like he was 90 instead of 68. I just took him in my arms and held him and said to my self "we will get through this". He has been here almost 4 weeks now and has gotten a lot stronger. He mows the lawn, (has to stop several times) built a small porch on the front of our home, and can now bend over and put his shoes on. (couldn't do that before he tolled me) He says he feels his legs are lots stronger and his arms and things are stronger. I got him to quite taking 80mg of lasix's to now only one lasixs a day and he says he will cut down to 1/2 since he has had no water retention with the cut back. He has been taking 80 mg for 2 years. I have been in the medical field as a CNA and know a little about meds and know lasix's is not good long term. I asked him about his last visite to his heart Dr and he said when he went the main one was not there and this other Dr said everything looked good and to just keep taking the meds. I have seen people that have had the surgery Ray had and after 6 months or a year you can't even tell. Guess I could go on and on but I need help about all these meds (I don't think he needs to be taking) and am I off base with thinking he should be better? He is getting stronger daily. What can I do to help him. I asked him if he is afraid about his heart. Being the man I knew he of coarse said no. You know how when you love someone you kinda feel what their feeling? I feel Ray is holding back and is really worried about his heart. since I have never had this problem I haven't a clue. How long is recovery? How long should he be on this lasix's and heart pills?? I also read up on the side effects of the meds he is taking. Not good. Can you help me? This man is my life and I want to help. nancy

Hi Chris, Thank you for your email. I am going to try and get Ray into a cardiologist this week. I have a supervisor at work that had this surgery years ago and will ask for recommendations on who to see. Last night I tolled Ray I had joined this group. His first question was "What for"? I just tolled him i wanted to know more about how to help him and more about the surgery he had. He just nodded his head. Then he said, I'm getting better cause I'm here and smiled. He has never asked for help dealing with this simply because he is Ray. Inside he is a very strong man and for him he just works things out himself. Me, I ask questions. Even if it is a Dr telling me anything. I always go research and see what I can find about anything tolled to me. I know I have to have patients with this. It isn't going to happen over night. And that is ok. I'm 57 and it has taken me years to learn patients. Gotta go get ready for work. Thanks again for your post. hugs nancy

Gail and others suffering from Pericarditis, I just today received a mini newsletter from the Cleveland Clinic and they say they have developed new noninvasive strategies to diagnose this disease, effective treatment options and a protocol to guide physicians through the appropriate care of patients. They can be contacted by phone at : 216-444-6697 or 1-800-223-2273, ext. 46697 and on the web at: www.clevelandclinic.org Good luck and I hope this can help you all. Regards, Chris in Seattle << Just thought I would let you know it seems my form of pericarditis is posing quite a dilemna for the medical community. I have been on CoQ10, MSM, prednisone, celebrex, indomethacin and aspirin and still it worsens everyday. The treatment has resulted is my blood pressure going very high 164/80 and in high blood glucose readings- I am a diabetic - normal readings for me are between 4.0 and 5.5 mmol/L and now they are between 14.1 and 16.2 mmol/L. I am on all kinds of medications and was fully investigated by leading cardiologists in Toronto. Will keep you posted what I find out. Today the blood pressure has gone up to 177/82 even with a medication adjustments. All thought appreciated even if no one has any specific information. Gail

From: Gail going very high 164/80 That's not really very high of a blood pressure reading. Is your doctor worried about it? 120/70 is perfect. And the top number is not that important. Scott's runs about 157/90 all the time and they haven't increased his BP meds. Nina

Dominika, So sorry you have to go through such scary surgery. I was scared about the heart bypass surgery and only had 1 day to prepare. Can't imagine what you must be going through. Medicine has come a long way in a very short time and the things they can do to keep us well are amazing. They do have to warn you about all the things that can go wrong during any surgery just like our medications give you long lists of side effects. Most people do fine and only a small percentage have any problems at all and most of those either go away soon after the precedure or can be fixed. The odds are certainly in your favor to have a good outcome so try to think about that. You are going to be so much better once you problem is fixed. Look at the positive side of it and try to think about how much better you are going to be once this is behind you. When you are signing all those papers just try to remember that if even 1 person has had the problem they have to put it on that form and your chances of having anything go wrong are very, very small. Let this group know how it goes and know that we are thinking of you. Welcome to the group. Ann
