Triglyceride treatment

Recently had blood work done. Thanks to the medicine, diet and exercise, everything was good - except triglycerides were at 200. Any thoughts for taking care of this with diet, non-prescription drugs or otherwise ? Thanks! Dave C.

For triglycerides, (to lower them) - Cut down on carbs, especially sweets, sodas, etc.

I lowered tryglycerides with lipitor & niaspan and reducing sugars. I always ate a lot of carbs (instead of hi fat) so I subsituted whole wheat and multi grain for breads and also ate whole wheat pasta occasionally. I reduced my sugars considerably. It is amazing on some low fat cereals how much sugar they contain. Read the labels!! Harry K

One of the best ways to decrease triglycerides is to dramatically increase your fiber intake while also decreasing your fat intake. My husband had Tri's of 500+ and by increasing fiber, and overall improving his diet we got them down to the low 200's within 8 weeks. Now I know that increasing fiber can seem like a daunting task. Dave did it with a supplement product and still takes it. I increase my fiber by eating a cereal called Fiber One (13g of fiber in 1/2 cup I think). And of course the best way is to eat your "5 A Day for Life" of fruits and veggies! Exercise is also a great way to bring triglycerides down. Eating well and exercise are still the best medicine!
