Ron, Shauna & Tina~ thank you all for your info & advice on HMOs & RX limits. I don't want to (& can't) let this slide. I would see my POP right away to get his views but my new insurance co told me I could still see him but it's now $30 a visit! So I'll do what I can with the HMO. Thanks, ~Lyn~

I see Dr. Joel Saber in MI head pain institute on ~*~*~*~*~*~* Letters, write letters & send copies to every one even remotely involved. Get your Dr to write a letter to Blue Cross. Ask Dr Saber also to write, fax or contact Blue Cross. Every one needs to write to the Director of the HMO & the Insurance Commisioner. It can't hurt, it might help. Good luck. ~Lyn~

Thanks for the warm welcome. A question, then I want to tell everyone about a book, which may be helpful. Has anyone tried the herb Feverfew? I have read its very beneficial, but you have to take it ALL the time. Herbs have no side effects (they cleanse, yes, but no side effects like drugs do) and should be no problem. I am thinking about getting on it. Also, I have a book called "The Liver Cleansing Diet" by Dr. Sandra Cabot..I have been on this diet to lose weight, but wanted to share a quote pg. 24 "Another problem for which I am continually consulted is that of frequent headaches and/or migraines. Many of the patients have seen neurologists and chiropractors and have tried drug after drug, some spend nearly every day zonked out on pain killers which of course, are toxic to the liver. Not many people realize that chronic headaches can usually be greatly reduced by cleansing the liver..."if you suffer with headaches follow the liver cleansing diet and avoid coffee and regular alcohol as these are liver toxins. Also, make SURE you drink 8 gl. of water daily, take 1000 mg. of magnesium daily." Just wanted to share that. I felt GREAT on the diet, it consists mainly of vegetables, lots of vegetables. Why did I get off of it? It was around the holidays, I am a junk food junkie, and felt deprived!! Catherine

Hi Catherine! Just a note to be careful when you think that just because something is an "herb" means it is safe and has no side effects. This is not always the case. Herbs sometimes DO have side effects and cannot be taken in any amount or just willy-nilly or haphazardly. A prime example is valerian. It is an herb and a muscle relaxant. It can help you relax to go to sleep. But be wary of taking it EVERY day! Just like you would any drug. My doctor told me that the use of feverfew has not been proven to really do anything in the prevention of migraine headaches. Some people think that it does help, however, so if you find it helpful, that is great! But there is no scientific proof. Personally, I tried it, but got no measurable relief in the number nor strength of my headaches. :-( Good luck with whatever you decide. Sue H.

so much everyone! The letters mean so much. I missed all but my first class today due to a migraine. It was tough. I feel guilty for missing them and my friends feel that you can go to class with a "headache" as do my professors. Hopefully with time they will understand when they hit all I can do is take my medicine which doesn't always work and sleep. Reading all your posts have been helpful. I'm trying to learn new ways to cope and triggers. Thanks everyone. You are all awesome and I'm praying for you all. Katie

Thanks for everyone's help. I just wanted to let you all know that I won't be on for about a week. I'm flying out to Arizonia on Saturday. I'm looking forward to the trip but im not looking forward to the flight. I just got put on antibiotics for a sinus infection..which of course triggered a migraine. I hope this trip goes well. I'll be praying for all of you that you are all pain free. Peace and Love, Katie

I just wanted to say thanks for the two responses to my question about vioxx. My neurologist did prescribe it as a preventative med, so maybe it'll work. :-)

Thanks Gabrielle, If there is anyone who knows how serious side effects can be it's me. I have had three new death experiences. I hope I never see another one in life either. Pumpkie

Tammy, I haven't actually had a migraine per say since Thanksgiving since being on Topamax but I have horrible daily headaches. It hasn't helped that but has helped the migraines. She mentioned the botox but that is all. She wanted me to give the medicine plenty of time and try the vitamin regimine she put me on and see what happened. I go back in Feb. late. We'll see what she says. I'm not sure my Ins. will cover the botox thing. We'll have to see. There is no mention of it in my plan. I assume because it's new but they have always said if a Dr. orders something they will always pay but since it's new I don't know. I will be checking into it. I do have wonderful Ins. though. It's nice to meet you on the list. Pumpkie

Pat, My husband will laugh at that one. He's no minister. My family however is very religious. I have 89 priests and nuns in my heritage. I'm signing off for the night. The super bowl is about to start. Pumpkie

you very much for all the info. I will check all this out. All this dizziness is just horrible. I can't bend over, shake my head. The worst part is. I can't even play ring around the rosey with my niece who is two. She wants me to jumpie with her on the bed and couch. I let her do that at Nante's. That's what she calls me. Her parents don't allow it at home but she can her. I can't do that with her because I would just collapse from dizziness. The whole world just spins. Do you know what I mean. You have this? No one has any idea what it's like to have inner ear. It's horrible. Oh and the throwing up from that is just horrible. Last Christmas I threw up till I was blew in the face I was so nausous from it. I just wanted to thank our awesome moderators for being there for me last week. I was having a doozey of a migraine that I had had for a week and was having other symptoms that ended me up in Urgent Care. While at Urgent Care, they decided I could possibly be having a stroke. Well, long story short, one medical professional disagreed with the other and they just ended up sending me home with nothing because the other dr "didn't appreciate" my left-sided weakness (mind you he didn't do a full exam and the 1st one did!! - and that's not even why I was there!!) And they didn't give me any scripts for my migraine because they don't prescribe narcotics. But the first person who examined me was so worried that they didn't even want me to drive home and was going to call the squad to take me to ER. Obviously she was overruled. When I got home, still untreated. I proceeded to call my neuro. Of course, he never called me back. So, I cried myself to sleep. Next day, I still felt like crap so I called my neuro again, got VM left msg... Then I got online with the moderators!! WHAT TO DO??? I called my PCP, got an appt, but not until that afternoon. I got my daughter home from school somehow. Then my migraine kept getting worse. I finally called my husband and got ahold of him and he took me in to ER. My neuro signs were gone (thank God). They didn't do a CT or MRI. But I got 3 mg of Dilaudid, some Phenegran and some Toradol. They almost tried to discharge me with my migraine. I was like, no I don't think so!! You are going to break this pain cycle!!! They argued with me and told me they couldn't give me any more narcotics. I said fine... find something else. I'm not leaving until my head doesn't hurt. There's no way I'm having a stroke!!! I was so proud of myself!! And I couldn't have done it without Pam, Gabby and Tammy!!!! THANK YOU!!!! I left the hospital pain free. It was a strange feeling!! One I don't think I've experienced for a LONG time!! YOU ARE ANGELS!!!!! Hugs and Prayers, Mary in OH

Reading your post I wonder why some of the health care professionals are so wonderful and helpful and other's don't seem to understand the seriousness of our migraines and possible consequences in insuffient treatment. I know I've mentioned this sort of thing before and I hate to go on and on. But I just don't understand. I've already gone to the ER at the urgence of others who are afraid I might have a stroke. And one of the times my roomate who is also my best friend went to and the doctor wasn't going to treat me at all! He told me to follow up with my neurologist because my migraine treatment must not be working. My friend was like, "that's all your going to do for her is brush this off. She can't even see right now and she has numbness on her one side, and you are simply going to send her home." He was just baffled as to what she expected him to do. He was like, "well she had an MRI and a CT in the past so I feel I can safely say it's just a migraine. Just because our MRI's were normal in the past doesn't mean there is no risk for a stroke. Some doctors don't seem to get that. And that fact a side, I do have a minor Vascual Anamoly and my doctor told me there is a slight risk of a bleed ocurring and that if I ever get the worse headache of my life or a different kind I should go to the ER. Alot of good it does, when they just "chalk it up to the migraines" I'm sorry to vent all, Really I am. I've got a massive migraine coming on again. I finally felt better for 1/2 a day. Kris

The Pamelor and Remeron are making me VERY lethargic. The neuro (Dr. Doyle) at Jeff said I should get used to it but I am still having daily headaches and I was hoping that by now (several weeks into these meds) that at least those would stop. He did do some trigger point and occipital injections and I am scheduled for another round of occipital on November 7. Dr. Doyle says that we just need to get the cycle to stop. I don't know what that is going to take. I have been on just about every preventative known to man and am getting VERY frustrated. I wake EVERY day with a headache and cannot even do anyhting about it except "suck it up" as I do not want to end up in a rebound situation. I go back to Jeff on the 1st and I will definitely ask him about the echocardiogram with bubbles. At any rate...Dr. Doyle has also asked if I have ever had the pressure in my spinal cord measured. Does anyone have any info on this? I have already had two spinal taps (I have a rare neurological disorder and had them when they were trying to figure out what was going on), and do not want that pain again. Thanks again, Eve
