SINGULAIR

Has anyone ever been given the asthma medication, "Singulair" as a migraine preventative? A neurologist prescribed it, but I have never heard or read about it, so I am hesitant to take it. Any input would be appreciated. Hippolyta

Hi Everyone, I would just like to share something that I think may help other people. Like everyone else on this list, I suffer from excrutiating migraines 5 or 6 times a month. For the past 8 months I have been trying various drugs to no avail. The triptans were useless and most of the prophylactics were not helping and actually making things worse. 24 days ago I went to my Dr. in tears and demanded that I be put on something else. I wanted to try Singulair, which is an asthma medication. So far it is working. I had one migraine over 2 weeks ago because I had MSG. This is the first time I have had relief like this in 2 years. I don't know how many other people this might help, but I thought that all of you here should benefit from this. This is a new therapy for this drug as well, so a lot of Dr's are not receptive to it. It was first suggested by my Neuro who happens to be an expert on HA's. I hope this helps someone. Enjoy your weekend and be as happy as you can be. Tricia

Tricia--I'm glad the Singulair worked for you. The first time I saw my current neuro, he had me try it. One study had shown it helped migraines. Didn't do much for me, but I'm happy to hear it is helping you. Jan B.

Message: 15 Hi Tricia, Thanks for the information on this drug. Can it be prescribed for someone who does not have asthma? How is it administered? Pill? Inhaled? Hi Linda Yes it can be prescribed for someone with out asthma. I don't have it, so it is strictly being used for migraine prevention. I take one 10mg pill every night. Now, I know this is not going to work for everyone, but I know there are more people out there who have tried drug after drug to no avail. I can't tell you how it feels to make it through yet another week migraine free for the first time in a year. It is like someone giving your life back. I so hope that this informationn will be able to help someone else. Good luck everyone. Tricia

This is interesting, because when I was considering Singulaire as an asthma treatment I was told it could make migraines worse. Perhaps it depends on what causes them? Confusing. EVe -- `If at first you don't succeed, try doing it the way your wife told you to.`
