Since this is the New Year 2005.

What goals do you have for this new year? Also How has everyone done with their weight? I thought after having my bypass I would loose so much weight, but I lost about 15 lbs and that's it, can't seem to loose many more. I change my workout time to 5 days a week 2 weeks ago, but my eating hasn't change much so I guess I have to make a serious change to loose more weight. It has been 6 months now since my bypass and I am still getting exchusted in the afternoons. Almost like pass out exchusted feeling, if I don't excerise I feel woorst. Another problem still is my sleeping, I can't seem to sleep flat yet. I seem to spent at 2-3 nights only getting 4-5 sleep if I am lucky. Is anyone else having these problems? I am very thankful and gratful that I am not having some of the serious problems that some of you have had this past year. I am so glad that we had this group so we don't feel alone with our problems. God Bless you all and I hope that everyone has a healthy, Happy New Year. Linda

Dear Linda: It has been 3 years since my bypass and I still have the same problems that you do. I can only sleep on my left side with my arm over my head. Some nites I can`t sleep at all and have to sleep sitting up. Like you I get so exhausted I feel like passing out. I take 2 to 3 naps a day. In the summer time it is not so bad, I mow a lot of lawns and build myself up.Winter time is the worst, I have nothing to do. Every time I go outside I get sick or catch a cold.So for your weight. My rehab nurse told me that it is common for a bypass person to GAIN weight after surgery. I have put on 40 lbs. I am up to 240 lbs. and I am a diabetic and am on a strict diet.I don`t know where the extra weight is coming from. Do what I do, adjust your life to the way you feel.I know the changes are hard to except but we are still alive. Relax and enjoy life and let the others do the work. Steve Linda Posnick <lindapos@... Linda its been over 2 years for me so I remember complaining to my doctors at 6 months about the pain in my chest, my leg swelling and just not feeling right. I fortunately have not had sleep problems. I do wake up in the middle of the night some, around 3 a.m., and will not be able to get back to sleep. I was getting up and taking a xanax and then going back to sleep but that can become habit forming and cause problems later on so now I just try to think pleasant thoughts and that helps sometimes. Nothing seems to work all the time. I did pay attention to what I was thinking when I woke up and it was usually something negative and I usually had pain either in my shoulders, chest, neck or my joints ached in my hands, knees and ankles. If my joints ache, I will take an advil and then try to go back to sleep. At 2 years, the pain feels like a bruised chest still. It feels like its in my rib cage and above my left breast and my left shoulder. I have decided that's not going to go away. I still get angry sometimes about the whole thing as there are so many things I do not understand like what I would be like if I had never had this surgery. I sometimes wonder how many people are walking around with lots of blockage and don't even know and how many of them actually drop dead. Guess that's something I can't know. For the first 18 months I was pretty careful about my diet but I still had more fat than was recommended in the rehab classes. I just did not feel good eating so little fat and I had indigestion eating too many green vegetables and more fruit. I do not like fruit so I was forcing myself to eat apples that do not even taste like the apples I had as a child and oranges today are bitter so I went back to snacking on dark chocolate and having hot tea with it. Fortunately, I don't have a weight problem but I do watch it so I don't gain any. I could stand to lose some but my doctors say I'm fine in that area. Mentally I still have a few problems with memory loss and a feeling of things just not being right. It's a nagging thing that you can't really put your finger on so I still struggle with it. You would think exercise and good diet would help the sleep problems so maybe you just need to give it another 6 months and see how it goes. Good Luck, Ann
