Shoulder Pain

Hello All, I'm Ed D. from Florida, 58 years old, had a stent inserted on March 5 and a triple bypass on March 6 of this year after experiencing a heart attack. I have learned alot about the recovery process and what to expect during that time period from the posts, both old and new, on this great group. I have been reading them for about two months. Thank God my recovery has been going well. I do however have one question. Shoulders. Has anyone else experienced ongoing and sometimes quite severe shoulder pain. It begins at the upper joint and if either arm is moved the wrong way sends a shooting pain down the arm, sometimes all the way to the hand. I have been to my surgeon, chiropractor and general MD, none of whom have helped very much. While this is probably a minor problem compared to some I have been reading about, it is none the less very uncomfortable most of the time and downright painful at other times. The MD gave me an anti-inflmatory called Naprosyn, 500MG. This has helped a little. Has anyone had a similar experience of have any suggestions that might help. Any input is appreciated. Best Regards To All, Ed D.

More like neck pain here. Usually comes and goes pretty quick so I rarely use my naproxen for it. I just double up on the OTC generic naproxen when needed, which is what my surgeon told me to do.

I had a 6 way bypass January 8, 2007. I'm 55. I didn't know they could do that many. I'm gratfull they can. They caught my probelm before I had an actual heart attack and I don't think I had any heart damage. Post surgery I have had a lot of shoulder pain. Mostly in my left shoulder (deep inside) but also some in my right shoulder. Some left chest surface and rib cage pain. Other wise I'm doing good. It didn't seem to really start bothering me until about 2 months post op. Family DR put me in PT, helps some but not much. Cardioligist says it's from Mammary artery harvest. Has anyone else had problems with shoulder pain after their surgery?

Yep, I have that too. I'm going to see my doctor next week. I had a quintuple 7 months ago. It seems to be getting worse as I try to get more physical and lift things. I think I'm going back to the heart center and start more upper body workouts. I talked to a friend who had a quintuple also and he thinks that his is worse in damp weather. Hi All: David had his CABGX4 on 7/27. Last Saturday, 10/6 he woke in the middle of the night with excruciating pain in his left shoulder. We went to the ER and the EKG, blood work and chest x-ray were fine. It happened again this morning around 2:00 a.m. Anyone else having shoulder pain???? Gwen

My shoulder bothered me for a couple of years and then just quit. The doctors told me it could be a rotator cuff injury but when it quit they seemed puzzled about the cause in the first place. My leg they tell me will always hurt and swell and that many CABG folks have that condition and it is because the vein was removed and the blood pools at the ankle. You only find out this little nuggets after the surgery. They tell you how much better you will feel after the surgery before you go thorough it. I am still waiting for that much better feeling and it has been 5 years. I almost feel as good as I did before the surgery. Now if the ribs would stop being sore I would be very happy.

My ribs feel like they are bruised. During the day I do not notice it but after I go to bed I often wake up in pain on my left side from just below the collar bone to the bottom of my ribs. I get up and take tylenol and then it takes me about an hour to go back to sleep. Once I am up and moving around it might be sore but not to the point that I even consider taking anything. I have told 3 doctors, 2 of them cardiologists and they have done x-rays and even just pressed on my chest and rib areas. I have a lot of scar tissue they say and that could possibly be what is causing the pain but everything healed up nicely and in the right place so it is not from something being out of place. They tell me I may have it from now on like my leg pain and swelling. It is the same for the funny little feelings you get or at least I get but not so often now. It feels like a battery vibrating in my chest sometimes and then once in awhile I get a sensation of being shocked just a sharp fast zip across my chest. That really has just about quit. It used to be ever day or so and now it is not even once a month. That is probably from nerves trying to grow back. My regular doctor says I am too sensitive to pain and it is mostly caused by my anxiety disorders and I'm not sure he isn't right since he knows me the best of all the doctors I have seen. The cardiologist I just saw here at Mayo Clinic told me I would always have those little aches and pains from my age 65 as well as the surgery and he said I was in excellent shape so just take my tylenol and xanax when I get upset and drink a glass of red wine everyday. The rib pain is not my heart and it is not angina. I have never had angina or what they describe as angina. Hope this helps.

I have had the sensation of the ground moving and thought it was from my blood pressure medication. If it happens a couple of days in a row a just take half a diovan for a few days and it quits and then I go back to a whole one. The cardiologist does not agree with me doing that as he sees nothing serious about being a little dizzy occasionally but it is not his body so there.

Thank you to all of you that replied to my post yesterday. So many good thoughts and suggestions that I have passed on to David. Maybe I can convince him to have a cortisone shot!!! I hope you all are having a good day today and continue to heal. Oh, by the way, David quit smoking yesterday!!!!
