pill

From: Lena Olin <lolin@... Nothing horrifying to me except that I have to receive this pro life crap from what should be a supportive mailing list about a specific disorder. In a message dated 6/30/99 8:45:26 PM Central Daylight Time, hippolyta1@... writes: << I was offended, too, especially since we were discussing the pill as it relates to migraines, not to someone's extremist personal philosophy. For those of you that were "offended" by my INFORMATION about birth control pills, you may want to go back & read it again. I went out of my way to leave my "extremist personal philosophy" out of the post, and merely gave the FACTS about a particular drug, which is what I thought this list was all about. The facts are facts, not my opinion. It is information that is conveniently left out by professionals, because the average person, would probably not like to take such a drug. I only wish someone had enlightened me a lot sooner. God bless, Sue

I don't doubt your sincerity, but as I've never heard a single thing about the "hidden" action of the pill, I'm skeptical enough to wonder about the source of this info. I've heard far too many unsubstantiated claims by evangelists (my first radio job was playing the pre-recorded evangelists' tapes all Sunday morning) that were presented as hard fact to accept this new info until it can be verified. Just because someone says it's so doesn't mean it really is so. Whether the misinformation I heard was done maliciously or in good faith (pardon the pun), I don't know. In the past month, I've received seven warnings of various viruses that are poised to do such things as erase the hard drive of everyone who connects to the Internet on a specified day. I believe that all seven warnings were sent to me in good faith. Had I not known that they originated as hoaxes, the repeated warnings could have made me believe them. Repeated claims about, say, a drug, does not make those claims true. Only laboratory and clinical trials can confirm or refute such claims. Again, I don't doubt the sincerity of the poster, but I do want to see some proof. Jeff

Sue, I don't want to start a big debate here, and I do respect your point of view (I grew up Catholic, and we were indoctrinated about the "horrors" of the pill at quite a young age.) but when you make a statement saying that the "average" person would not want to take such a drug, I do find myself offended- You are saying essentially that everyone who disagrees with you, and I do, I see nothing horrific about what the pill does at all, is some kind of strange sick person. Of course you have the right to post this information, and your opinion on it, as far as I am concerned, but you also must know how loaded a topic this is. People tend to be rather intractable on both sides. In short, you are going to offend people. Which shouldn't prevent you from taking a stand on the issue, but I fear this issue is not possible to discuss without offending someone. -Cathy

Jeff, Not to be too graphic, but the pill thins the endometrial lining of the uterus so the egg does not become implanted. I believe this is the "hidden" information Sue referred to, although how she can equate this to abortion (which is, of course, a woman's individual choice) is beyond me. Hippolyta

Group: I feel partly responsible for bringing up the subject of the pill, and I for one, probably the only one, appreciate Sue's info contained in her response to me. Call me an idiot, but I never knew the pill worked in exactly that way. I don't feel she was out of line in posting her opinion, or that she spoke with "attitude", but that's just my opinion, call it what you will. So we got a little off-topic....so what! I've enjoyed this group. I've felt comfortable here up until now. I lurk occasionally at ASHM but never post for reasons similar to what's going on in this group now. Fear of being attacked for something I might say, or for attitude being read into one of my sentences. If you don't give a rat's butt about Sue's opinion, ignore it, move on. Why the need to attack? I have far more important things to worry about, far more serious issues in my life right now and I don't have time for this. I thought this group was different. I thank each and every one of you for your suggestions and opinions and information and support and encouragement and prayers, no matter what your thoughts were or who you were praying to - I know that each one was meant from the heart. And so was Sue's response to me. I wish you all well. ...Tina "Never place a period where God has placed a comma."

Well, I wasn't going to post on this topic again, but I wanted to say thanks to Hippolyta for voicing my thoughts exactly. I'm here to talk about migraines with all of you fine understanding and knowledgeable folks, and when I instead receive unsolicited Catholic biased "education" on the pill that has nothing at all to do with migraine then it just makes me want to unsubcribe. I'm sure there's plenty of "anti-choice" mailing lists that would be appropriate to voice your views. -l

Cathy said: Cathy is correct - this is a loaded topic for jsut about everyone and everyone seems to be missing the major point - this list is for the disucssion of MIGRAINE not birth control, pro-life or pro-choice. Unless that particular side effect of the pill that Sue alludes to is a known cause of migraine, it doesn't seem to have a place here. Having said that, each and every one of us is likely going to have a different reaction to the information that Sue posted, but that discussion just doesn't belong here on the migraine list. Not only is it majorly off topic, it could certainly begin a flame war that none of us wants, and that will irreparably damage the closeness of this group. My suggestion would be that any further discussion of this topic be taken to private e-mail between those parties interested in continuing the discourse. Heather, I take Lortab for pain pills. I have fibromyalgia and I have them in the house at all times. My neuro lady knows I have them and approves it I take them. She just doesn't want me to take them unless I have to which I never do unless absolutely necessary. Most people know on this list I suffer to death until I really need to. I'm not a pain pill person at all. I don't want to be a rebound person. Besides I have a long life ahead of me of fibro. Pumpkie
