niaspan

Okay........before I go try to do an extensive research of which I do not have the time right now, I decided to try here again. My husband is on Niaspan because of his inability to take statins. It has worked very well, however...the doc is trying to get him really up there is dosages. My question: Have any of you had reactions to this besides the flushing, pins and needles thing? He has had that and is coping...but he also went downhill real fast mentally and physically when he upped the dose again. He could not get out of his tracks. No ambition, no drive, no nothing. It is totally NOT like him. He has cut back down and is feeling better, altho last night he was awake with the flushes and this morning he was quite frustrated........now threatening to quit them altogether. Please, if anyone has a place to steer me for research...or any experience themselves, please let me know. Thanks so much. Dear Jill, My cardio has attempted to get me on high dosages of Niaspan along with the Zocor I have been taking since 1997. I have been able to handle 500mg of the Niaspan but when I up the dosage the itching and flushing would about drive me crazy. I had to go back to 500mg and just last week the itching was unbearable so after the blood draw (for VAP Tests) I stopped taking it completely. Keep in mind that my cholesterol numbers are very good, Ctot=173, HDH=93, LDL=68, Tri=60, but the cardio wants me to take the Niaspan to change the particle size of the LDL stuff so that the liver cant get it out of my body! I have already told the nurse practitioner, in his office that unless this will help me live a GOOD 10 more years I don't want to mess with the Niaspan. We do not have the VAP testing data back yet but I plan on having a very pointed talk with the cardio about what direction I should be going on this. I hope tis help and that your hubby gets over the reactions he is having. By the way why won't the cholesterol go down with the use of statins?
