New Doctor

Well, I went to my new doctor yesterday. I went in with a plan and she said it's a good one so we're kind of starting from scratch. I couldn't get a male doctor to acknowledge the possibility that my migraines are for the most part hormonal, particularly caused the estrogen in the birth control pills I've been on forever. She immediately recognized this as a likely possibility and we're going off the Inderal and the B/C pills, leaving me only with Imitrex in the event of a migraine. I go back in six weeks and if I haven't had a migraine by then we'll have pinpointed the culprit. :) I'm excited about the possibility of it being something so simple...but that doesn't explain the perfume / odor triggers...unless I'm more sensitive to them at certain times of the month. Enough female talk on a mixed list. :) Melody

I saw the new doctor this morning and he seems to be a good one. He wrote a new prescription for Stadol and said he'll work with me on the migraines in addition to the headache clinic, but he wants to get my file from my previous doctor and review it before he does anything, which makes sense. He wasn't concerned at the rate with which I use Stadol, but he did tell me that Metoclopramide, which I take as an anti-nausea drug, has some nasty side-effects. Apparently, if you take too much of it, you develop a strong twitch and that continues even if you never take the drug again. This was the first I'd ever heard of this, so I'm reducing how often I use it. I don't take it every day, and I'm not twitching, so I must be OK so far. Thanks to those who posted messages or sent e-mails wishing me success in finding a new doctor. I think I've got a good one. Jeff Rankin-Lowe

Jeff, Congratulations on finding a good doctor. I hope your good luck rubs off on me and that I, too, can find one. I have to wait until April 1st to change due to this HMO crap. Diann

Yikes! I take that for acid reflux. Michele that Metoclopramide, which I take as an anti-nausea drug, has some nasty side-effects. Apparently, if you take too much of it, you develop a strong twitch and that continues even if you never take the drug again. This was the first I'd ever heard of

Next time I get to the public library, I'm going to look up Metoclopramide in a drug encyclopedia and see what it says about it. I'm surprised that the two neuros I've seen and my family doctor never said anything about this side-effect. I used to take Zantac for acid reflux, but a revised drug information sheet then said it could cause headaches, so my doctor switched me to Pepcid (Famotidine) a few years ago. Jeff

How is everyone today? I'm dealing with a 4-5 today but it's my own fault. We ate out yesterday at a new restaurant & I wasn't very good. Well, I went to my current family doctors office yesterday to sign the papers for my records to be transferred to MY NEW family doctor. I could have been a chicken and let the new office take care of it but I felt it was important for him to know why I was leaving. I didn't write a paragraph but did at least state that I wasn't getting the help I felt I should in finding specialized doctors. I am looking forward to meeting with my new doctor next month because my sister-in- law is also her patient and recommended her highly. I do feel sorry for the new doc though because she has a lot of file to go through when it gets there. :( Sue H
