meds
Migranal, being another form of ergotamine, has the same problems as old cafergot (ergotamine tartrate + caffeine) -- gotta take it during the pre-migraine aura stage, and it makes most of us nauseous. Since I don't get the aura (at most, a "funny" feeling as a migraine comes on), the cafergot was (1) too late and (2) couldn't take enough cause of the nausea. The triptans (Imitrex, Zomig, etc.) were the big breakthru since they could be administered at any stage of the headache -- except for those who can't take it. Along the same lines (vaso-constrictors & dilators), if you are ever given nitroglycerine for angina, expect to instantly get the worst migraine of your life (this med directly dilates the blood vessels -- all of them). This relates to diet: avoid **all** preserved meats (lunchmeats, bacon, etc.) -- a quick look at the label shows them all preserved with nitrates & nitrites. They will build up and have a similar effect as nitroglycerine. If you can't resist something (love that bacon), keep the amt. & frequency down. (Avoiding MSG just goes without saying.) If you've got a doc who's willing to prescribe out&out painkillers, don't go buying into the bullshit. Chronic pain sufferers who are prescribed opiates rarely become "addicts" and the side effects and dosages level out based on pain level. As opposed to true addicts, chronic pain sufferers on opiate maintenance re-join society instead of withdrawing. My migraines are caused by a damaged cervical spine and the purely "migraine" meds don't touch the cause or the neck pain that radiates... [do a 'net search for an org called asap -- they got lots of info on opiate stats, facts, etc. -- also lots of good cross-references] Ron
Seiden wrote: <snip Well said, Ron. Too bad we can't pound this into the closed minds of the anti-Stadol nazis. Maybe the'd leave us alone for a change. I don't go near alt.support.migraines (or whatever it's called) any more. I got fed up with being accused of being a drug addict every time I mentioned how much Stadol has helped me. Some of the posts were bad enough, but the e-mails were unbelievable. Jeff
If you gotta take a whole lot of Imitrex, look into switching to Zomig, which apparently lasts longer... Ron
Karen -- I saw you say that you're on routine OxyContin w/ OxyIR for breakthru. My pain doc's testing me out with one Tylenol#4 three times a day -- so far it's working -- fewer and less severe migraines and feeling generally okay in between. Can you tell me if Oxycodone (either "-contin" or "-IR") works pretty much like codeine? I know they're not exactly the same chemical, but is the effect similar? On my next visit I want to get put onto something a bit more routine than trying to remember those three pills every day. (My problem stems from a cervical crunch.) Thanks. Ron

I keep reading things making it sound like it's so strong and I have it for my back pain and I hardly know I'm taking anything. It doesn't really make me sleepy or anything. It sometimes works but I'm not sure it would for my headaches. I take Fiornal#3 for that. Thanks, Linda<<<<< Hi Linda, I take a generic for darvecet called Proproxy-N/APAP 100-650 TAb. by Mylan generic for Darvecet -N100's I don't have a clue what that all means, but my pharmecist told me theres only one level of darvecet that there aren't any differant strengths. Darvecet is Darvecet. So that's all I know about it. it doesnt make me extremly sleepy anymore. I did in the beginning so maybe I'm getting to used to it I don't know. I don't take if all the time, so I don't think so. But it works on the headaches, so I wont argue. the only problem is ........ that it was my orthopedic who perscribed it for my tendonitis in my shoulder, not my regular doctor for headaches. *smile* and to be honest, I feel safer taking a pain pill then I do taking something that's expanding my blood vessels. that just sounds scary to me. ( Imitrex) I have taken that one 3 times over the last 2 monthes. but I don't like that burning feeling. I take the pill form of that and still get that burn. dont like that. cindy

Propoxy is the generic for the narcotic part. the APAP is the generic for the Tylenol. 100- 650 is the strength of the drug. The first being the narcotic and the 650 being the Tylenol. Hope this helped someone. Maggie
I wondered if anyone has had this problem. I am taking 150mg of Imipramine (generic for Tofranil). I originally was taking 6, 25mg pills to equal 150mg. The Dr. changed it to 3 pills of 50mg. I never had zinging feelings in my mouth when I took the 6 pills. I'm having now that I'm doing 3 pills. I also have a metallic taste. Has anyone ever experienced something like this? The only meds I take are BC, Imipramine. The Lunesta is taken as needed to help me sleep. It's just seems strange to have these side effects when I'm still taking the same dosage, just in a different form. Thanks, Becca
