Maxalt

It was on the local news tonight that Maxalt is now available in Canada. I haven't paid much attention to posts about it before, so can I ask people to let me know what they think of it. If you think it's been covered enough in posts to the group, feel free to message me directly. Jeff

Thanks for the reply, Kat. So far, the only thing that will reduce or stop my migraines is Stadol and I'd love to find something else. Jeff

Hey wow - great news. Funny, I just asked my Doctor about it last week. I've been looking forward to trying it for a while since I've gathered from postings here that it works better for many people than the other available 'triptans. It seems to me though, that if Imitrex, Zomig, etc. don't work for you then Maxalt may not be much of an improvement. My best wishes to you though! Lena

<<I recently heard of a medicine - can't recall the spelling, Maxox maybe? - that is dissolved on the tongue and gets rid of the migraine, the light sensitivity, and the nausea. Anyone familiar with this? Sounds too good to be true. Marian, I think the medication you are thinking of is Maxalt. You can get is as a capsule or as a wafer that dissolves on your tongue. My doctor gave me samples. It seems like a lot of people have had good results with Maxalt. With both the capsule and wafer, I feel sleep quickly. When I woke up I was headache free for about three hours. That's the same as my reaction to Imitrex shot or pill. My best result has been with Zomig -- pain is gone for seven hours (but may return after that). We all react to the various meds in different ways. But maybe your doctor has some samples you can try. My PCP gave me some Maxalt samples last week, and it didn't do anything for me... But then again, they're thinking I mostly suffer from tension/migraine headaches now instead of classic migraines, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Anybody know if they use different meds for tension headaches? -April

hey, Teri, or anyone else who knows: I asked my doctor about Maxalt for my son. It's not in my PDR. Where can I get some good data on it to show her? She's out of the office until Monday and sounds agreeable to trying it, but I'd like to have some facts on hand when I talk to her Monday. Lynn

I was on Maxalt, and all it did for me was make me sick to my stomach, alot easier to do then the Imitrex shots, but the nausea...Think I would rather have pain for a few seconds. Plus for me the Maxalt didn't really do much for my migraines. I hope someone else out there has better luck with that drug. Amanda

I'm still catching up on some of the older posts. I did try Maxalt. I did help with the migraines, but it put me to sleep! It's hard to take a med at work and fall asleep at your desk. I've found Zomig works best for me. But we all realize on this list that everyone has different reactions. Jan B.

Maxalt put me to sleep too but it was a welcome after fighting a headache all day. The next day my head seemed cloudy etc and yes I could not take it during the day and work.... cheryl

My neurologist gave me some samples of Maxalt a couple of months ago. I tried them and they worked for me. The only thing I did not like is that they made me very sleepy for a couple of hours. But since, they worked otherwise, I decided to keep them on hand and had the prescription filled. However, there are no instructions as far as dosing on the box. Are these taken the same way as Imitrex? I have taken that (100 mg). The dose on that was to take one and if the migraine did not go away, I could take another in a couple of hours. I would be curious as to what other doctors have told members on this list as far as dosing goes just as a guide. Is it about the same as Imitrex? Doris in Virginia

I know this has been mentioned before but, I just read it again and thought incase there were some newbies here that didn't know, they need to! Maxalt-MLT for migraines contains aspartame! LIKE that is going to help a migraine! Take care, Marci

It's my own opinion "K" but, I think aspartame is poison to human's!!!!!! Hugs, Marci

However, can I make a suggestion in the meantime, if you type in "disability" under archives at the top of the group page, I know Tammy had a discussion with a girl pretty recently on the subject of disability and how it all works there, so there may be something of interest there for you. Thanks for the information and taking the time to reply to my posts. Are you the moderator? I am glad I found some others to talk to. I have done lots of research on migraines and I think I have lots to contribute as well as to learn. I have a medical background and have been worked up for migraines. Only until recently have I found my miracle drug (Maxalt) It is not a narcotic and it is in the family of trypthans..this one being rizotryptan...a sister drug to Imetrix or sumatropin. I like it because of being absorbed in the mouth. Unfortunately it makes one drowsy and cannot be taken with people with high blood pressure of heart disease. Beth
