magnesium

Since I'm fairly new here I don't know how much you've discussed this but is any one taking extra Magnesium? My Dr heard of a study that us lucky people with Migraines tend to need or not have enough Magnesium. He started me on 750 mg a day in Sept but warned me of the laxative effect. (milk of magnesia & magnesium citrate are laxatives)He was right, & I couldn't continue it. I did take cal-mag before ,though not that high a dose & may try that again. I also heard of some one getting a shot of Magnesium to relieve a Migraine. The 5~HTP supplement that I tried (for serotonin) also had Mag in it so... Anybody have any results with Magnesium? Thanks, ~Lyn~

Lyn, Someone told my husband last week that he'd heard great things about people with migraines taking magnesium shots. I don't know anything about it though. Would be interesting to look into. Melody

Maybe it will offset the constipation caused by Nortriptyline. I hope. Jeff

I have tried to find some to no avail. Thanks.. Karen

*****My Dr suggested 750mg a day, 50 mg a.m. then 250mg p.m. But as I said before I couldn't continue to take it. I did cut back for awhile then stopped all together. I don't have a clue what the dose is in the injection. I'd like to know more about that. And any side effects. There doesn't seem to be much info on minerals. ~Lyn~

I could not continue the mega doses of Magnesium the Dr suggested because of diarrhea. Lyn, What dosage were you on? Was your calcium intake 1/2 that of the mag? I currently take a cal/mag/zinc supplement(chelated). They recommend 3 tabs/day but I only take two. Three would supply 1000mg cal/400mg mag/25mg zinc. According to the article, these proportions are wrong. I'm trying to figure out if this info is accurate or are they just trying to sell me a new health magazine. The article came in a sample health magazine that only whet your appetite for more info. Linda

I did both the magnesium and calcium for over a year. I bought the good stuff from the pharmacist...they have it behind the counter, it's not on the shelves and it's rather pricey. Followed the directions that ache and magnum put out for migrainuers and guess what? Lots of money wasted and NO change in frequency or duration of migraines! Hugs from Jan

Barnsie: I just wanted to thank you again for the information you sent on magnesium. The hotline to mksalamon.com was most helpful. I hope to try this therapy soon. I just need to decide when it's time to give up on the last treatment of choice. I don't want to try too many things at once so I don't know what is helping (if anything is). I'll keep you posted. Blessings, Linda

I sort of think of myself as the queen of hypoglycemic diets after going five years on one. I had no sucrose or simple sugars for five years, can you imagine? So I know all about this. However, I'm drinking Gatorade AFTER working out, which helps balance out the severe sugar depletion that can happen after exertion. Gatorade also has electrolytes and minerals that we often sweat out during workouts. I no longer am classified as hypoglycemic, so drinking Gatorade after a workout is not going to hurt me. It merely replaces the sugar that was lost. What's bad is eating candy and refined sugars and carbos during the day, at rest, which will severely screw up the blood sugar balance. They are still doing tons of research on this subject and opinions differ, but I think trial and error is often the best way to find out what works for you. Lynn, Sometimes, when a migraine is only "threatening," Advil liqui-gels taken with coffee or tea will help me. That's the only time they help, but if the headache hasn't actually begun, they sometimes help. Hope you beat it. Teri

Teri, Don't have the liqui-gels but I do have tons of Ibuprofen. And tea. :-) I'll try it. Why are liquid-gels better? I'm really bummed out about this Fiornal rebound situation, because I can't seem to resist the urge to take it when I get a tension headache. I really have to stop taking it (I keep worrying about that addiction threat, although I know what addiction is and this isn't it...yet.) But what I need is something that relaxes the muscles in the same way the butalbital does. Does anyone know what might work? Someone told me that rubbing a little Tiger Balm on the forehead works for her, but it smells to high heaven. Not appropriate for going out in the day time! Sometimes, when a migraine is only "threatening," Advil liqui-gels taken with coffee or tea will help me. That's the only time they help, but if the headache hasn't actually begun, they sometimes help. Hope you beat it.

Linda, I take 400 mg just two times a day. It says to do so three times a day, but I've been on them over a month and was working up to that gradually. I take the mag with calcium and the mag pill has zinc in it as well. Hope this helps some of you. I am doing better since the start of these pills. All my love, Kelly K. kellyek@...
