Lynn

Dear Lynn: My son, age 12, gets a migraine once a week. The neurologist made us wait until he turned 12 before he would prescribe any of the triptans (and so far, none of them have worked). It frustrated me to no end, I've read on other newsgroups of younger children taking triptans. My son is a very big guy at 5'3" and over 130 lbs, the size of many adults, yet the doc still made us wait for the age thing. Wishing your son lots of pain-free days ahead. (Fingers crossed that once they get thru puberty, their misery will end!) ...Tina "Never place a period where God has placed a comma."

Oh, Tina, I agree. I sincerely hope our kids will be the lucky ones who grow out of migraines. I never had them as a kid and developed them after he was born. Your son is bigger than I am! And my son is very small for his age. Barely 4'10" and 75 lbs. So it's hard to tell when he can try the triptans. They work so well for me and I hate to see him suffer. All he can take now is Midrin. And it's getting to be useless. Lynn

It isn't for people with asthma, Justin has very mild asthma and dosn't even need an inhaler. When he first started it, he needed his inhaler for gym class, but his body soon got used to it and it dosn't affect his breathing. Justin takes 10 mg two times a day. His neuro wanted to increase it at the last visit, but it seems to be working, so I'm going to wait. Because it's a bata blocker and slows the heart beat, I was very reluctant to try it. Justin has other medical problems too, so I worry alot. It hasn't affected his heat though. Cathy/Justin

Tell me more about this. I haven't heard of it. Lynn, Inderal is a brand name for Propranolol. It's used primarily as an anti-angina, anti-hypertensive drug.(heart med) It is a beta-adrenergic blocker. It blocks certain actions of the sympathetic nervous system, lowers BP, & manages heart rythym disorders. For me this type of drug lower my already low BP so I was more lightheaded & dizzier than normal! Didn't help the Migraines. I guess you do have to be aware of kidney & liver function & I'm not sure why but if you have asthma, hay fever, bronchitis, you should not take it. (?) Cathy, Good to hear it's helping Justin. ~Lyn~NH

Hi Lynn: My son, age 12, suffers with weekly migraines also. He wakes in the mornings with them. He sleeps nearly the entire day, and if he wakes up, he gets into the shower for relief. Then he sleeps again...then he hits the shower again...he sits in the tub and lets the water run over him. Sometimes he uses ice for relief. Sometimes he prefers heat. We use a "rice sock" for heat. It's very easy to make and convenient to use. Take an old tube sock and fill it with white rice, tie a knot at the end. Nuke it to desired temperature as needed. It conforms so well to where ever you need it most! Tell your son he is not alone, and good luck in your search for relief. ....Tina "Never place a period where God has placed a comma."

Hi again, Lynn: Do you know if caffeine helps or hurts your son's migraines? One thing I do that occasionally helps me, is to take a double-headache powder (B.C. or Goody's, it doesn't matter), and if I can keep it down, and if I can lay down and rest, *sometimes* it knocks my migraine out. Those powders are loaded with caffeine, so sometimes I just end up a wide-awake lady with a BIG headache! Just another suggestion. ...Tina "Never place a period where God has placed a comma."

Somestimes I take a BC powder and a Diet Coke and sometimes it works. T he other day I tool an imitrex nasal spray and the migraine calmed down but late r came back. I did the BC and Diet coke and it knocked it out. I have some Zomig samples from the Dr. but haven`t tried them yet. I hope they are better than the Imitrex. Barbara

In both cases, they didn't take BP medication. My grandmother didn't find out until her heart was enlarged and much damage had been done. Eventually, she had a stroke and died. My mother just refused to take the BP medications and I'll never understand why. She also had a stroke or a cerebral hemorrhage. So, don't get scared. If you are taking your meds, you'll probably be fine. Lynn
