Leg Swelling
Hi, I am also a diabetic and I am now 10 weeks post-op. I recently went to the doctor about the leg swelling because it was so painful. She recommended a diabetic stocking with mild compression and it has worked wonders. This is the 5th day I have not had any leg or ankle swelling. I just wanted to say we certainly do all heal at different rates. I am still quite sore but for the first time I have managed to go for short outings to a store or for groceries. Just now I finally have the breathing problem under control. Gail
I am starting to have some problems with swelling in my left leg, which is where I had the vein taken from for my bypass in January. My cardio says "I'm not bouncing back like he wants". I thought I was doing great but he seems concerned over the swelling plus my BP is higher than he would like it and he says I'm carrying around about 20 extra pounds of water, which explains why I'm having shortness of breath again. Has anyone ever had problems with their leg that the vein was taken from? The swelling actually didn't become a problem until I went back to work in early April and was on my feet all day....
My leg was fine until I went back to work and started sitting all day. Then it would swell and I would have to leave work and go home and elevate the leg. The way my doc explained it is that you have already lost some circulation in the leg because of the vein removal. Then when you sit for a long time the chair edge cuts off more circulation. I could not get up and walk it off because of the type of work I did. Now since I am home and can get up and move around a lot, my leg has not swelled at all. And, when I travel, we make it a point to stop every 2 hours so that I can get up and walk for 10 or 15 minutes. My bp also went back up to a very high level when I returned to work. I did not think my job was stressful. Actually thought I liked and enjoyed it. But, as soon as I retired, my bp dropped to a very nice level and has stayed there. I am now starting my 4th year since bypass and my bp, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, are all very, very good. But, it has also been almost 2 years since I stopped working. I am quite amazed at the difference it has made. Like I said, I never thought my job impacted my health as much as it obviously was doing. Ocassionally, I get a little short of breath and I step on the scale and notice that I have put on a couple of pounds overnight! I take a lasix and potassium pill when that happens and the shortness of breath goes away after about a half a dozen visits to the bathroom. BARB12 deb1125wa <deb1125wa@... Hi all, My mom had quadruple bypass last April 2006 and her legs were extremely swollen. Her legs are still swollen now but the leg where they took the veins is a lot worse. She still wears those special socks and is on lasix to help with water retention. Some has to do with her medications. One of which is a calcium channel blocker (dynacirc) and that doesn't help much. The doctors have all told my mom this is just something she will have to live with. Exercise does help but then again if you are on your feet all day that makes them more swollen. Take Care Cindy
