Hi!
I've been subscribed to this list for a while, but have only been lurking. I decided to come out of lurkmode :) I've suffered from migraine since I was about 9. I've tried most meds, but nothing has been successful. Today, I had a pretty bad one and had to go to the doctor for a new perscription of Midrin. I'm still feeling incredibly nauseous, though. The doctor wants me to go back to the neurologist since my headaches have increased in the past two weeks. I had 3 last week and 3 this week. I think it's more likely due to the stress at work I've been under these past couple of weeks. Has anyone used Excedrin for Migraines? It worked for me a couple of times, but recently I've just been feeling worse from it. Has anyone tried Magnablocs or Feverfew? I saw that someone mentioned laughing during a headache and the doctor figured that meant the person wasn't in pain. I identify with that. I try laughing or joking at work and I think everyone thinks that means I'm not in pain. My boss is telling me to just get my mind off the headache and go away, but it's not quite that easy. The best cure seems for me to go home and get to sleep. I'm interested in hearing how others handle migraines at work and if their boss gets angry when you have to leave. Sometimes I can deal with it at work, but other times I just have to leave. Anyone else? Yvonne

I have been getting migraines since I was 13(16 years ago), did not know what they were for about 2-3 years after they started. As for the work question: I work in a large office here in Florida. My current manager is very good. The times I have a migraine and want to get off the Phones, Instead of leaving and getting "a point" he will let me take as much time as I need and goto the "quiet room" and rest, if that doesn't help he will let me leave, usually without the point, as long as I TRY and stay first. On the other hand come in late and the man does not budge, even if it's only 8 minutes due to weather!!! I guess thats because his wife has health problems and he knows how it is. laura--Central Florida
Hi Laura, I've worked for the same company for 10 years, but I've had many different bosses over the years. The others always understood about my headaches. Unfortunately, with the type of job I have, there is no place to rest and people continually pounce on you as long as you're there. The funny thing is this boss gets annoyed with my headaches, but at the same time told me he suffers from them too. I find it strange that he wouldn't understand what I was going through, if he suffered as well. I tend to think he might get bad headaches, but not actual migraines. Some people confuse tension headaches with migraines. Others think they are just headaches and not so bad. This is the third day I've felt sick from a migraine. I didn't get the aura or pain today, but the nausea from the past two days is still with me. Take care. Yvonne
I am extremely fortunate in that my boss is extremely understanding. I have been able to call in sick or leave early because of my migraines whenever necessary without any hassles whatsoever. He encourages me to leave when I am in extreme pain, in fact, when I am trying to stay and get things done. He is even arranging for me to have software installed on my computer at home so I can do some of my work at home which will be so incredibly helpful during the bad days as I am sure you can all imagine. This is a far sight better than my last job- which was an assistant manager position with a retail store. No matter how bad it was it was almost impossible to call in sick unless you could get hold of one of the two other managers to cover for you- someone had to open and close the store. Many times I had to work with severe migraines- I would spend as much time as possible in the office upstairs in the dark, near the bathroom, but of course there were inevitable customer issues to resolve which was quite a challenge, I promise you. Not to mention closing the store which involved closing out the register and putting together the bank deposit and filling out the spreadsheets. I'm glad those days are behind me. Cathy
Hi Susan, For some reason, Excedrin only worked the first couple of times I tried it. After that, it's made me actually feel worse. I'm not sure if I was feeling worse from the Excedrin or because the Excedrin was doing nothing for me and the headache was getting worse. I'm back to using Midrin. I wasn't aware that you could use Feverfew if you were taking some other kind of medication, such as Midrin. I've been going on and off Feverfew, but stopped when I went back to Midrin. Maybe I should start up again. I've heard caffeine is a great help, but it's never helped me with my headaches. Yvonne
Hi Karen, Yes, I do believe they are stress related. My neuro once told me that I react to things that happen around me. There is no set pattern to the migraines. Sometimes I'll wake up in the morning with one. Last week was weird, I was in the middle of an argument with my boss when suddenly the flashing lights started, I got dizzy, etc. I guess that's obviously stress related :) The duration of the headaches can be anywhere from an hour to a few days. I think last week's was 3 days long. Really? Here I thought it was something new and really just for migraines. I was saying to someone else that I wasn't sure if the Excedrin was making me nauseous or if it simply wasn't working and I was just getting nauseous from the headache. I'm going to stick with the Midrin for now. Maybe I'll go back to Feverfew too. I usually try to laugh or joke around when I'm upset or not feeling well. I have no idea why, but maybe as you said it takes my mind off the pain. Fortunately, I've had no migraines this week but maybe I shouldn't have said that so loud :) Yvonne

Hi! Well, I fell asleep at 5AM and got up at 9AM. Good grief! I am not going to be online too much longer because Tim and I are going out to shop and hang out, etc. I will try to get online again tonight, but I hope I will fall asleep faster tonight because I know I will be beat. Have a GREAT Saturday!
