Colin: The harder you work and the more pain you take with deep breathing, exercise, coughing, etc the quicker your respiratory functions will return. I had a collapsed lung and I believe I babied myself too much at first which only prevented me from getting the "gunge" out. Use a pillow to your chest for coughing, sneezing, etc. Dave C.

Hunter: My lung collapse occured during or just after surgery. I never learned the reason. Shortly after I awoke from surgery a doctor and physician's assistant came into my room, turned me on my side , cut a hole between my ribs under my left armpit and inserted the chest tube until it seemed to snap into place. The warm fluid from my lung gushed down my back. It was a truly medieval experience. Dave C.

Actually, they're right. This procedure is something modern medicine is _really_ good at. Presumably you're going to a regional heart center where they do dozens of these things every day. With virtually 100% success. If you want to be terrified get e.g. kidney stones - they still have no idea what causes them or how to prevent them, and surgery for them can be dangerous. Look back through the archives here for some real world experiences. One thing I always recommend is if you can have someone at home to help you out your first week back. Try to resist the impulse for loved ones to take a lot of time off work while you're in the hospital - at that point you're being waited on hand and foot.

Today I saw the surgeon and ask about my chest and leg. He thinks it is nerves that were cut and have not had time to reconnect. Seems like it is just about impossible to do this surgery without cutting a few nerves. Other than that I was doing very well. My doctor for my depression increased my antidepressant and thinks some of the pain is from me being so intense and so easily discouraged. So maybe that will improve also. Does seem like it takes a long time to get over this surgery. Longer for some than others and now they are telling me it might be as much as 2 years before I feel back to normal. Whatever that is!!! Have really enjoyed this message board. It helps a lot. Good luck with the mended hearts chapter. Ann
