Hello-
Hi my mom just had a quad. bypass one week ago. She is doing ok I think. Some edema yet in her leg from the grafts-and some sob at times. I have been reading a lot about the sternum incisions coming open and such! Yikes that scares me-I though they wired you shut pretty good! LOL--I am glad I read that though-My mom would definatly know or feel it if she ever does this then right?? That is scary- Thank you to anyone who send me advise-I am her somewhat only caretaker! Michelle
hello michelle, although you hear about sternum breakage and stitcures coming loose, this is not the norm. make sure you mom uses her pillow when she coughs even if she has to keep it on top of her at all times. make sure she holds it tight when she coughs. this will not only lesson the pain but will help keep her from breaking loose anything. she is wired or should be real good and stapled to gether so unless staff or something goes wrong she should do just fine. they used a braided wire on me this time because i broke the last one. the main thing about sternum breakage is trying to push getting well and doing to much to fast and the possibility of a staff infection. i had a quad and am out of hospital about 3 to 4 weeks now my stitures are healed i have this pretty long zipper in my chest and holes where the tubes were, but i stayed with my daughter for about a week or so. i dont really remember the time line cause all the days nights ran together but is close. she dared me to try to do any thing. when she wasnt there my grandaughters was there and they are just like her so i healed good. i am not sure what edema is but my leg was black and blue almost from groin to bottom where they finished getting veins. i do have some pain in last cut cause they said they cut the nerve going down to foot. it is mainly a very unpleasent pain that shoots down to my ankle. they said that should grow back together but is a slow process .i am 57 years old but doing fine am home by my self now and can stay here as long as i do what my daughter tells me i can and cant do. she almost as hard headed as me, i didnt give it all to her just enough to get by [the hard headedness] ;-]. to be truthfully it is just going to take some time for her to get well. tell her to keep the wound clean with antibactrial soap and dont bandage it needs air to heal, the wound part. they told me short walks at first in the morning and then in evening. good luck and i hope your mom gets better real soon Michelle <mangels5@... Michelle, Bless the caretakers of this world! Your mom is so lucky to have you. I had some problems with my leg swelling at times for the first month, especially after sitting a long time. Just have her put her legs up and it helps to get up and move around. The pillow, like Ron says, is the godsend..and if she got one of the breathing exercise things, that will help the sob (which is normal). She sounds like she's doing pretty good and I wouldn't worry about complications. Many people don't have them. Will she be going to cardiac rehab? Lor Thank you Ronald-I thought she should be using the pillow yet-I will enfasis that more today. She is concerned about her leg-but I have told her the bruising is normal. She does wear her Ted hose and that helps a lot/ Thank you and take care of yourself! Hi, Yes, I sure did have a problem with my coloring the first month and sometimes now. My boyfriend would notice if I got out, my coloring would be better for awhile. Depends on circulation and of course, pain wipes a person's coloring out. How is your mom doing now? Lor Hi- Thank you for your encouragement!! I need it! Mom is doing good too I think. Yes she will be going to rehab-but i guess not for a couple weeks yet. I have a question----Do any of you that have had this surgery have trouble with your coloring? If you know what I mean-mom sometimes seems very pale to me. No pink cheeks-today though she looked a bit better--but there are days it really bothers me and her too. After she had her Heart attack and her angioplasty it hasn't been the same. Just wondering--I am glad I found this group!!
