Digest Number 130

Hey everyone, I get links sent to me by refdesk.com and they just sent me a healthy recipes link. Probably, all of you know about it, but in case you don't, it's www.deliciousdecisions.com. On another note, my friend Jonathan, who had bypass two years ago and angioplasty this summer is getting more and more interested in alternative therapies. Does anybody here 1)approve of them 2)know anything about beta blockers? Sorry to drop in and ask so much, Floraine

Sorry to drop in and ask so much, Floraine Floraine, You're not asking too much! That's what the list is all about.....ask away as often as you wish! Regarding "alternatives", are you asking about natural alternatives to prescription medications/treatments? If so, I do support people (and encourage them to) looking into alternatives. I personally work for Rexall who offers natural alternatives, and I joined them because I felt they had the best product line on the market (based on sound scientific research and best manufacturing practices). I think it is important for people to research and understand what they decide to take, and to not just reach for anything "natural". Personally I feel that all too often in this country we accept the idea that a prescription is the ONLY way to deal with a medical situation. I think that alternatives should not only be considered by patients, but offered more often by health care providers. On that same note, however, I am also a firm believer that there are times when prescription medications are the best choice (I for example have to take one for my thyroid condition, there is no natural alternative for me right now). What it boils down to, in my honest opinion, is someone making the best choice for their own life. When someone turns away from what I offer, I don't take it personally - I know that that person has made the best choice for themselves. My job is simply to let people know that there are alternatives (I deal mostly with cholesterol reduction and heart disease prevention). Can you tell this is a topic I live every day? :-) Now, the reason I was confused is that the 2nd part of your question was regarding Beta Blockers. These are not generally considered "alternative". I do know them, as I have to take them daily for my condition - what specific question to you have about them? Thanks, Ann Ann McCrea, RN Preventative Health www.rexall.com/atm/health

Dear Ann, Thanks for the generosity and intensity of your response. I think Jonathan doesn't know what Beta blockers are and wants to know more. I talked with him about L-Carnitine, which I hear is supposed to bring energy to the heart and he was receptive (which is unusual). His doctor already has him on Coenzyme Q-10, so I also thought his doctor might be okay with talking more and more about natural alternatives. I am in an odd place--the friend/ex-student, generally not charged with much responsibility or involvement--although I do hear earfuls from time to time. I am trying to take advantage of one such opening now before I get shut out as the kid next door again. I will go on Rexall's website tonight after work and make a list of more gentle suggestions to bring up. Thanks, Floraine
