Digest Number 1293 (medical records)
In 1998 I had my by-pass surgery and after about a year we decided to move closer to our kids. I thought it would be good idea to get my hospital medical records as I was in the hospital for over two weeks as I had total organ failure. I wanted to have the records to show my new doctors so they knew exactly what had happened. I called the hospital and was told it would cost $1.00 per page and I had so many pages that in the end it would have cost me over 350 dollars. At the time I was too upset and still recovering from surgery so I decided not to spend that much money. But the hospital did say for no fee they would send me a one page report giving facts regarding my surgery etc. I received it and after looking it over was amazed that there was no where on this report anything about any of the problems I had encountered and it just sounded like a normal heart by-pass description with nothing out of the ordinary. To this day I feel pretty sure the price was inflated for some reason as I know people who have gotten their records at the same hospital since then who didn't pay more than 25 cents a sheet............. In hindsight I wish I had gotten those records........................ Carol in Atlanta
