My personal bias is for people to get into a cardiac rehab program after bypass; such a program can usually be found at a local hospital. There are anumber of reason for this: 1) Whether or not you have had an m.i. (heart attack), the heart can be 'jumpy' after bypass. That could potentially lead to heart-rhythm realted problems. So the monitoring and supervision would pick this up, if it were such a problem 2) They would provide an 'exercise perscription' at the end of the rehab . - a known safe level of exercise based on your perception of effort, and probably upon heart rate achieved during exercise and upon other factors. That, in my opinion, would get you 'out of the gate' so to speak. At any rate, I recommend that if you are going to get back in to exercise, that you do it GRADUALLY. Good luck and do discuss with your doctor. Harold

Harold...I echo your thoughts. They have such a program here and I cannot see enough good things about it...it runs for 6 months, twice a week with nurses and physiotherapists on staff and they really do monitor/record everything very carefully, and gradually increase your exercise program, heart rate etc...they do stress tests going in and out of the program, and also provide classes in such matters as dietary care, stress counselling, medication, etc. They also maintain a direct link with your doctors.
