Ed, my psychiatrist believes that the heart disease and depression go hand in hand. Most people who have heart disease especially coronary artery disease also have depression and doctors are just now realizing this and sending their patients for treatment for their depression. He thinks people who tend to get depressed also tend to have heart disease. The doctor I see specializes in people over 40 with depression or anxiety from major surgery and he really seems very knowledgeable in this area. Not just heart surgery but cancer and other serious conditions. So maybe we should all be evaluated for depression and receive treatment if necessary. Ann
It's been 4 weeks since my double bypass. I am 40 years old. I am still having discomfort in my chest where they cut me. They took an artery out of my arm and my hand is still numb. I sometimes get spasms in my chest which sometimes makes it difficult to catch my breath. My surgeon says this is normal after bypass surgery. I was wondering if someone else has had the same preop symptoms I am having. Thanks.
Hi Well, I had my bypass in December 2004 and I still get discomfort in my chest where they cut me...my leg where they took the vein from still throbs occasionally..and also trying to catch my breath, but it is easier, and getting easier although I recently had stent done (about eight weeks ago now I think)... My Husband always reminds me that it was major surgery....and not to expect to be perfect so fast...if ever I guess.. I am sorry, sounds like doom and gloom Rob, you will find wonderful people on this list who will be able to tell you similar or the same...guess we are all in the same boat..but this list is wonderful, I have only been a member a little while and can't tell you how much it has helped me! Regards Maria
A couple of my bypasses were veins from a leg. I had numbness in the leg, ankle and foot for at least a year. No real problem, however. There was also occasional chest pains for several weeks. Bob S.
