Beta Blockers
Jon, the metoprolol tartrate you take is the generic for lopressor which is a beta blocker. I use to take that along with Cardizem. The lopressor slows the heart rate down and yes it does cause tiredness. I take Toporal XL, which is another name for the beta blocker. I also think it has made me gain weight like Anne said, but the doctor has told me no, but then they also say it does not make me tired. It really only makes sense, if it slows your heart beat down, what about your metabolism and then that would cause you to not burn calories like you should. I am so glad you seem to being so good. I lurk around all the time and, but very seldom send messages. I just like to keep track of everyone.
Hi Clay...thanks kindly for the insights...I find this subject very informative. I will have to look-up the betta blocker I take - metoprolol tartrate (what a tongue twister) and see into which category it fits...if such information is posted. I find your concept of alternating, as you feel, between two distinctly different beta blockers - I suspect that is not very common...but if it works...why not. Hi, I am a lurker in this group having had bypass surgery a little over a year ago. I feel I have to relate my experience with beta blockers. I have been taking them for about 25 years since the days when I believe Inderal was the only one approved. At that time my bp problems were found to be stress related and Inderal lowered my by and relieved the physical symptoms which were primarily a "foggy ness". I still remember the first time I took Inderal. I was almost at the point of being unable to function, certainly it was dangerous for me to drive, and the beta blocker provided relief within 30 minutes. I've found that there are differences in the types of beta blockers. The way it was explained to me is that some are fat soluble and some are water soluble. The fat soluble ones enter the brain easily and do slow you down. Inderal is one of these and is great for calming one's nerves when doing public speaking or suffering from caffeine jitters. Likewise, it can slow you down and make you tired. Tenoromin (sp) is supposedly water soluble and doesn't slow me down but does lower my bp. My doctor gives me prescriptions for both and let's me control the balance between the two as I see fit depending on stress and other external factors. I realize that both bb's are quite old but they work for me so I've found no reason to change. I appologize for not knowing the chemical names off hand. Clay
I am taking Lopressor as my beta blocker and after checking out the side effects from it, it seems that I have about 90% of the side effects bothering me. Mostly being tired and short term memory loss among others. Were you able to get off the beta blockers following your six week check up? Also, because of insurance complications it appears I will not be going to the hospital rehab program. Can you tell me what sort of excercises go on at the rehab you attended for the first few weeks. I have a tread mill and a Total Gym here at home and am sure I can replicate several different excercises at home. I do about an hours worth of good walking a day not counting all the walking I do all over the house every day. Anything that you guys can forward to me would be very helpful.
