Beta Blockers - Metroprolol Tartrate

This is really interesting about these Beta Blockers. I have been on 100 mg of Metoprolol Tartrate for quite some time and have been gradually feeling worse and worse. I honestly thought I was on the way out ....... but did not attribute it to these tablets in particular. I am also on Atorvastatin, Isosorbide Mononitrate, HRT etc. etc. and a few others. One day I was looking after our Grandson because his Mother started work early, and once I had bathed him and fed him breakfast and taken him to Creche I was exhausted - and this was first thing in the morning! I sat in the car outside the supermarket and was too tired to go and buy bread and milk! I crawled into bed at 10.00 am and the next thing I knew it was 10 past 3!!!! I had done nothing all day and felt so ashamed! I mentioned this to my Cardiologist when I saw him a few days ago and he suggested anti-depressants as well! I told him in no uncertain terms that I did not want any more medication and felt really angry - but it is difficult to get too stroppy when you are just sitting in a hospital wearing only knickers - especially when you have spent most of the afternoon getting dressed and undressed for different procedures in different rooms in the same building! He said he would change the drugs and write to my local doctor about this. In the meantime - the letter has not arrived at the Surgery - I have stopped all the drugs except the Cholesterol and Aspirin and am already feeling more awake. I have even been able to start walking again........ My face no longer looks bloated and my clothes feel better......... Sometimes, when you visit the Hospital, kind as the doctors and nurses are, it seems as if you are just number twenty seven patient that day. Quality of life is so important - we do not want to spend the rest of our lives asleep or like a zombie..... We are all aware of our own mortality and life is far too short ..... Take care Jenny

Hi Jenny...yes, it is very interesting about Beta Blockers...and all medications for that matter. We can all have such different reactions to different dosages. What I am about to say - I can only say applies to my case history and am certainly not trying to play doctor or pharmacist...you should continue to talk to your docs and seek their wisdom regarding your specific case. I had a reaction to Metoprolol Tartrate - and the only reason I was able to isolate that effect was because I was taking my other medications once a day in the morning, and the metoprolol twice a day....a.m. and dinner time. When I first had my heart attack last Sept. I was prescribed metoprolol at 50 mg twice a day. This seemed fine for some weeks...until I had an incident. One day, all was going fine and a friend asked me to meet him at a social function after work. I took my evening metoprolol and headed to over...shortly after getting there I felt very, very strange. I felt like I had not sense of balance..and was starting to stagger...I thought of driving home but realized that would not be a good idea...I had my friend drive me home...and I laid down..in a couple hours I felt fine. The next day I phoned my family doc and explained what had happened to him. He advised that I try taking one a day and only at bedtime...and see what happened. I thought about it and thought if I am taking two pills a day they obviously have about a 12 hour effect....so I started breaking the pills in half...and was taking 25 mg in the morning and 25 at night...and all seemed fine. I explained this to my family doc and cardiologist and they said if that was now working fine..to continue with such a dosage/split. A few months after that I had bypass surgery and when discharged there was a medication note that I may want to try dropping to 12/5 mg of metoprolol twice daily...my other docs suggested I stay with 25 mg twice daily which I am still doing. Rarely do I seem to have a drowsy or loss of balance type of effect from the evening metoprolol pill...may ask about it again...perhaps I should try the 12.5 mg in the evening?? But, I will not do it without the consent of my family doc who I respect, trust, and rely upon immensely. Again, I am not saying it is this pill in your case...it was just so clearly in my case and the docs agreed with the reduced dosage. jon Subject: [BypassSurgeryRecoverySupport] Beta Blockers - Metroprolol Tartrate This is really interesting about these Beta Blockers. --- In BypassSurgeryRecoverySupport@y..., "Jon Del Ben" reactions I had a reaction to Metoprolol Tartrate, one day I felt very, very strange. Jon - I often felt that my balance was going and I too, would go and lie down - and then sleep! Thanks for your suggestions. Sometimes maybe our bodies need these drugs little and often - or in the case of some of them - they are better taken at night just before we go to sleep! Take care Jenny

Take care Jenny Jenny...I am glad you are better. You were right to question your meds. I don't post here often since it is my husband, Frank, that has the heart problems. But I appreciate so much all of your thoughts & I have learned a lot from each of you. Take care of yourself! Sharon in Alabama
