All in the Family

Had a double bypass 3/24/05, nearly four years after my wife had a triple -- same cardiologist, same angio results, same hospital. She had to go back for a second hospital stay with post surgical incision infections. I went back after a day and a half home, but I chose to have pneumonia. I'm trying to match her every step with a few creative twists of my own. It is a great advantage, having a caregiver who's been through it all before...and speaking of pump heads, guess who's being called a pump head now...what goes around comes around. Actually, there are some issues my dear wife can't help with and she explains that she "blocked out" many of the unpleasant parts of recovery. In other words, she can't necessarily relate to my every pain and explain the reason for my every experience. But she's great nevertheless. Here's an issue for the group: smoking. After a thirty year pack-a- day habit, I quit smoking in February. My last cigarette was Feb 21, before I ever suspected there was bypass surgery to follow a month later. Matter of fact I have pointed out to all my doctors, and anyone else who nagged and preached about my smoking, that the last time I actually felt good was when I was smoking that cigarette on Feb 21. So to anyone who wants to congratulate me for quitting: thanks for nothing. I'm kidding, but I'm not. I swear that having no cigarettes has been worse at times than the post op pain. I haven't had one. I don't intend to have one. I don't smoke a day at a time. Sometimes I don't smoke an hour at a time. Anyone else out there fighting this particular fight?

Welcome Barb and Pal ! Smoking seems to be the issue at hand today. Boy, I could use some help on that matter!! Sorry to say, I haven't been able to kick the habit as yet, yes, I have been on the gum, the patch, the inhaler, cold turkey, and wellbutin. Maybe I should try them all at the same time...not funny, I know. I appalud all of you for your success, I know it's not impossible, many many have quit, my husband did, and tons of others that I know. I had my triple by pass July of 2003, then a sternal debridement in August of 2004. Finally, I am healing from this 2 year experience. Now to stop smoking. If any of you have any questions, we are all here to help each other. Take care

Hi All: I just came back from my Primary dr. On his cabinet he has posted a shot that will have you stop smoking in 24hrs without any side effects. My husband asked about it. They first have to run EKG and some other tests and the total cost would be about 500. Hes going to wait until the VA has it. I never went back to smoking after the quad. Boy would I love one. The urge just doesnt leave me. Especially at target times. Cuppa coffee and after eating and just plain relaxing....Oh well Stannis
