A Joketeller's Joke
A man is new in town and finds a quiet neighborhood bar, sits down at the bar and orders a beer. After a few minutes, a guy at a table calls out "Twenty-seven!" and the whole place breaks into laughter. The man is quite puzzled at all this, but just sits there, quietly enjoying his beer. After a few more minutes, someone else calls out "Fifty-nine!", and, again, everyone in the whole place seems to think that's hilarious. The man really can't figure out what's going on, but still says nothing, and orders another beer. Soon, another patron yells out "Fifteen!", and, once again, there is laughter all around. Well, the man can't contain himself anymore and calls the bartender over and asks what is so funny about calling out numbers. The bartender explains, "You see, it's a pretty regular crowd, been coming here for years, been telling the same jokes over and over, and they're all still pretty funny. So, to make it easier, we assigned each joke a number, and now we just call the number instead of having to retell the joke." "I see," said the man, "very cute idea." He goes back to drinking his beer, and, after several minutes, turns to the crowd and calls out, "Twenty-seven!". No laughter, not even a snicker. He calls the bartender over and asks, "What happened? I heard that joke number called earlier and it got a huge laugh." The bartender answered, "Well, some people can tell a joke, and some just can't....."
