getting out of chair

2008-12-31 23:48:01

When I first came home from surgery I also had trouble getting out of chairs, bed etc. I found that an extra pillow on the back of any chair and a pillow on the seat made it easier. With the recliners I found they were too low so had to use the cushion so that when you leaned forward at the edge it was easier to get up without using your arms. Tell your dad that it does get much easier after a couple of weeks and at that time you can use your arms a little bit. I found Shoppers Drugs (in Canada) has a special ejector seat like cushion you can buy which has a built in spring to help you get up. I'm not sure what it is called but I refer to it as an Ejector Cushion. All the best to your Dad I know he will get much better as time goes by. Guy

Leg questions

2008-12-31 21:04:19

Are the areas of numbness on my legs a normal thing? I know that's the leg that got all cut up, so I've been assuming it was normal, but it seems to be bothering me more today. Not painful, but weird, and moving seems to make it feel better. My ankle area is almost totally numb. Also, sharp pains in my pectorals (putting it nicely... what hurts is my boobs). I do remember my doc saying sharp pain is not the pain to be on the lookout for. They sent me home with nitro, and to be honest I don't know if I'm supposed to be taking them or not. I wasn't in a great deal of pain when this whole thing started. Yesterday I had to go get the last two staples removed, and then we did actually went some places, and I think I may just be sore today from all the activity yesterday.

Getting out of a chair...any ideas?

2008-12-31 13:28:09

Hi, My dad wanted me to find out if any of you figured out ways to move yourself out of a chair besides scootching your bottom back and forth to get to the edge of the chair. Today he put his hands on the front of the arms of the recliner and pulled himself forward a little. His surgery was just over a week ago and he is having trouble getting comfortable...and also has trouble with the scootching. He doesn't want to sit in a straight back chair all of the time either.0 If there are things that worked for you maybe you could pass them along? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Chris

Questions about my dad's bypass/valve replacement recovery

2008-12-31 05:08:26

Hi Everyone, I'm so glad I found this group. I have some questions and feel that they can be better answered by folks who have lived through this experience. Last Wednesday my dad (he's 73) had his aortic valve replaced and also had a triple bypass. He had a bad reaction to the morphine they were giving him for pain and became paranoid and confused in the hospital. (My dad is normally an easy going, very humorous, person...so this was way out of character for him.) He was convinced that everyone in the hospital was trying to kill him...and there was nothing we could say to convince him otherwise. They stopped the morphine when this problem started, however it took a while for his confusion to go away. Actually, it wasn't until he was home that he felt safe again. He said he was never so scared in his life when he had these thoughts and he still feels an uneasiness about the experience. Did anyone have a similar experience? Also, his hands and feet are very cold. He is on a blood thinner because of the valve replacement and I wondered if this might be causing it. I was going to ask about the terrible ache he is getting in his back and shoulders, but I have learned from reading past postings that this is very common with open heart surgery. He will not take anything but Tylenol for the pain though. I am going to tell my dad about this group tomorrow and get him to read through some of the past postings. I think it will do him good to read about your experiences. He has been home for three days now and is doing well. He seems to get a little stronger each day. I live next door to my folks, so I see him a lot. This was a scary surgery for him (and anyone) to go through. No matter how much the doctors explain, you really aren't prepared for this. I'd appreciate anything you have to share. Thank you. Chris

Staples

2008-12-30 22:10:19

I had the staples removed in my leg yesterday. (I'm only two weeks out.. quadruple on Dec. 3) Today discovered two staples still in. We called and were told it was a mistake, so going back Thursday morning to have them removed. I'm really getting bummed. I'm only two weeks out and miserable, and reading about you that had your surgery such a long time ago). Somebody tell me something good.

Funny vivid pumphead dreams

2008-12-30 15:42:02

Hi group. Since my cabg 3 months ago I have had very colourful 3D dreams. Last night I rolled over and got the stabbing pain that several of us realize are just nerves regenerating. In my sleep however I thought I was having a artery spasm (I had forgotten my nitro patch that day). As I partially woke up I quickly grabbed my left wrist to feel for a pulse, and to my horror found none. Now I was really scared until I became fully awake an realized there is no pulse in my left wrist because thats the arm they used to harvest the radial artery so of course there is very little pulse left to find. I woke up laughing at myself for being so stupid. Sometimes the sideaffects of surgery can have a funny side. Guy

Things I won't do anymore...

2008-12-30 09:18:04

Yesterday, I was trying to unplug a drain on our kitchen sink. I laid down on my belly on the floor so I could get a better angle for taking off the compression fittings on the drain pipe. I got it unplugged ok, but then I tried to get up off the floor! OWW! I tried the "push-up" method of getting my feet underneath me, and I got a STABBING pain in my chest in the area of the CABG incision! I kept trying to get up using this method, and I could NOT do it! I had to call my wife to pull me up sideways so I could get my feet under me. Note to self: DO NOT lay on the floor on your tummy ever again! (And that has always been one of my favorite TV watching positions) I hope this note finds everybody happy and feeling good. Post CABG pain in back

2008-12-29 21:35:34

I had CABG surgery in August 2007. All went well, but I still have alot of pain in one area of my back. I know that back pain is common, from separating the rib cage, but I expected that the pain would be much less by now. I have alot of discomfort getting up and down in bed, getting up from a Lazy Boy style recliner, etc. Is this normal 5 months after surgery? How long should the pain last? Any suggestions? Also, I still have alot of pain in the chest area when I sneeze. How long should this last?

Pumphead revisited...

2008-12-29 21:16:51

I know I told you guys a few days ago that I was having a difficult time getting back to work as a computer technical support agent. Well, to let you know what was happening, I just got back from my cardiologist. After I described my problems with my fuzzy thinking and not able to remember how to do my job after my CABG, he said that he wasn't suprised. He even mentioned the "pumphead syndrome", and the fact that it is a legitimate concern after being on the bypass machine. He also said that at my age (67) that he doubts if it will ever get any better, and he put me on "indefinate disability" because of it. So it appears that my working days are over as far as doing something where my mind is concerned. Physically, I am not restricted, so I guess I could go to work doing hard labor somewhere. (just kidding) Anyway...since I did mention my problem to you folks previously, I thought I would follow up and see where things stood with me. I feel kind of good about the fact that the doctor understood completely what I was talking about, and told me that this thing sometimes happens when we have to go on the heart-lung machine for an extended time. I hope everybody has a good day... Jim from Idaho :)

major heart surgery

2008-12-29 14:26:11

My wife (45 yrs. old) is going to have a major heart surgery at uab in a couple of weeks. She lost 80% in an attack 7 years ago. The mitral and aotic are both regurgitating badly and the heart has enlarged alot. How are the first few days after surgery? We are raising our granddaughter and I kinda need to plan on what to expect if she makes it through the operation.

infomation.

2008-12-29 05:30:10

Hi. Question. Has anyone tried Angioprim? The liquid to dissolve plaque in the arteries? I found it on the net one day. Sure would be better than the quad by-pass I had. Type in angioprim on a search and look it over. Let the group know what you think. Tom

Possible multiple blockage. New information

2008-12-28 20:50:49

Hi, I start cardiac rehab next week. I asked some questions of the nurse at the rehab, specifically about any additional blockages. I was told by the surgeon that the one 90% blockage of the LAD was it. The nurse said that from what she could see, there were actually three blockages of the LAD, the 90, a 70 and a 30. This completely floored me. Could she be reading the chart wrong? Could they have bypassed all three with one graft? now worried....

heart valve replaced,

2008-12-28 17:32:26

i had 1 by pass & heart valve replaced march 2007 . i did so well ,felt great! started to walk my 2 to3 kil a day after a month, during summer i painted ,mowed lawns, gardened, with no problems, at all.. i went threw rehab" healthy heart program "& did better then most 1/2 my age ! then i went on step walker machine in class & my leg started to hurt(,in my calf) the part where my vein was removed didnt hurt at all,& still doesn't For the first 6 months i felt terrific !b But now !!, Since begining of oct, after walking 5 minutes my leg starts to pain so bad in calf that i have to stop for a minute,& then go on,again, i cant do the walking that im suppose to for keeping my heart healthy, i was sent to a vein specialist, he was more interested in my age( 75 ) then in my pyisical condition ! or trying to give me help for my problem !!!! or suggest what can be done, I have been trying to get some answers of why all of a sudden i cant walk ??? the specailist did say ,it was hardening of the artries,( with out so much as any tests) just feeling pulse, i asked, what could be done, he said, could have, angeogram, ultra sound, or ballooning, or stint ! yet he didnt suggest what would be best for me, !!! it seems if i was younger he might of had a suggestion of what could be done, ! he had no interest in my physical condition at the age of 75,which till now has been very good !!no none believes im this age, !Has anyone had this kind of problem after surgery, this far down the road ???

mood changes

2008-12-28 15:44:53

My husband had triple by-pass surgery 6 months ago and this message center has helped so much. I thought he was not trying to think or pay attention to what we said. Now I know it may be memory loss. Are there mood changes and severe swings associated with this surgery. He seems to be a new person. So negative and hateful to his family. Has this happened to anyone else and is there hope that it will change. Bobbie

Hi, glad to find this group. On Friday Oct.26, 2007, I woke up with an aching feeling in my left arm. I took 2 aspirin and went to the ER. 12 hours later, I was in the IU with enzymes slowing climbing up (they only went to 0.36). The following Monday, I went into the catheterization room, and turns out I had 90% blockage of my LAD - not a candidate for angioplasty due to location. I was scheduled for a by-pass the next day. Single, possibly double. The bypass actually happened on Wednesday, Halloween. It was a single-used the mammary artery - seems the 'possible' other blockage was just a narrower-than-usual artery. I am told my heart was fine, no enlargement, no other known issues. I recovered well, and was released from the hospital November 5, 2007. I am a 55 year old male with no history of heart disease. I had a stress EKG in March, 2007. It found nothing unusual. I was extraordinarily lucky, and blessed to have received such good care. My recovery is fairly smooth, good days, bad days. Taking Metropolol, Lisinopril, HZCT and Norvasc as well as Crestor. I also (had been taking) Zoloft over the past year. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks since the surgery. I am still frightened, cannot believe what happened, scared that it 'might not work', and confused about what to do - where I go from here. What are the risks? What about the 'blockage', where did it go? Can it break off? Are there more tests I ought to look into? I am sure that my story is not unusual, but for me, it is all I have.

By-pass surgery

2008-12-27 15:44:37

Sometimes I have the need to talk to someone about where I have ben. Most of my friends just acknowledge me and go on. In 1972 I had a by-pass with the internal mamery artery,I quit soking did all the right things and still had pain that the docs described as arthuritis of the chest wall.So we did another arterograham and found the original blockage had opened up,and no explaination for the pain but it went away.I went 28 years before I had any more trouble and then I had a quad by-pass with veins from my leg.I went another year and developed mofre pain and went back to docs andthey said that I had an anuerism and it had to be repaired.O found that the year old by-pass had scar tissue and had to be redone. So veins from the other leg.We went on for another year and I had some terific pain(of which I have never had). They took me into the cath lab and did a procedure and found that my main arthery had disected. So i was put into a drug induced coma for three weeks and they told me that it would heal and for me not to worry about. Some time after that I became over come with pain and went to the docs and we did another cath and they said and I saw a picture of the artery coming out of my heart had a small baloon on it so we repair that and I am down the road by three or four years.I don't know about each of you but I have always been a believer in GOD and am sure he there with those docs during my stay.We can live over these thing and go on but it is sure tough sometime.I am 69 yrs old and find that my friends are going away pretty fast. GOD'S sspeed to all of You Bobby

Quick question

2008-12-27 09:36:20

I am male, 56, had a single bypass in March 2007. The surgery went fine, went home after 4 days, started recovery. All was going well or seemed to for a couple of weeks. I was on Lipitor, Atenolol, Lisinopril and a single aspirin each day. I was walking and trying to work up to jogging as part of my three times a week exercise. One day I could not sleep at all, ended up walking and jogging for two miles. Ended up later that day having cold sweats, and agitated feelings. Went to the ER, they said the lipitor was breaking my muscles down and put me on Zetia. From the Zetia I think I ended up with hives, joint pain, stuffy nose. I had never had hives in my life. My feet started to hurt when I would first wake up each day. It would be extremely hard to walk until I had been vertical for a few minutes. Eventually the pain would go away, or lessen. I mentioned to my Cardiologist about my feet and also about an odd feeling in the center of my chest. He said that my heart was fine, doing great, but had no idea what was causing the pain in my feet, or the odd feeling in the middle of my chest. They switched me off of the Zetia, and to Pravachol. The pain in the feet lessened a bit, although the joints in my hands hurt like the dickens when I first wake up. It was more of a presence and no pain etc. My regular doctor said it was weird that my feet would hurt like that, and had no idea what would cause it. He told me to try Alever twice a day for a couple of weeks, to see if that helped the pain. I have found Aleve helps a bit, but just wondering why all the other pains all of a sudden. I had no pain while walking or standing after the surgery. I was even able to work in the yard and did great for awhile.

I went to your site andthere you were wearing a bikini. I was just wondering what kind of coverup makeup you are using as your scars are totally invisible? I am sure a lot of the ladies would like to know as the Holliday season is soon approaching and a lot of the dresses are low cut.I have gotten a consealer, but it is not as good as yours. All kidding aside, I realise this is a spam for a porno site. So, how is everyone doing? It has been nine months since my surgery. I have a little problem. My husband would like us to take a holliday, but I am scared to leave town. I want to stay near my cardiologist a my surgeon and the hospital where I had the surgery. Is this a common feeling? Before the bypass, we talked about taking a holliday when everything was over, but now I am too scared to go anywhere . Thanks Sharon

2008-12-24 03:11:21

I have been on this group for several years and I learned something from Kay. I did not know they could bypass an artery at the back of your heart and that is why they called it a widow maker. My mother-in-law had the artery on the backside 100% block edand they could not bypass it but she had her CABG 25 years ago so they have imporved a lot since then.

While I joined this group a while ago, I haven't gone back to it until now. It has been a year since my double bypass, and after reading everyone's messages, I think I am as normal as one can be having been through this! I used the weed eater for about 4 hours today, and had to take a pain pill. But, I can put up with the aches, pains, and sensitivity compared to the way I felt before the op. Thanks to all of you for sharing.

hert rate after CABG

2008-12-22 08:22:38

My husband at 48 had double bypass un-expectantly due to a unstable blockage in the Left main artery at the first Y. This was 8 months ago. He has been recovering well, back on line, exercise is bike riding, walking, running, tennis as he is a firefighter so needs to stay in shape. However there is a issue that I think he should speak with his doc about. He wears a heart monitor when exercising to keep heart rate below 150 as advised by card. rehab. But after, at rest, his rate on the monitor will jump to 200+ for a couple sec. then perhaps down to 50 or below. Not all the time, he thinks. I need to add that he was showing atrial flutter before surgery. You can hear the heart slow down so I don't think its a monitor issue as he's says. (Of course he also said he was getting a cold when having chest pains!) Acording to Doc, no heart death. What do you all think? Kathy

Truck Driving

Another Question (sort of related to my original post)

2008-12-22 00:28:51

I am sorry to bother this group again, but I think you guys have a better idea of what I am going through than my family does. Here is my question. It has been two months since my quad. bypass. The nerve sensitivity on my chest has not let up one bit. I am taking some medication to dull the pain, but by the end of the day I cannot stand anything touching it. I am thinking that this is not the norm two months post op. Is there any hope this might go away or at least lighten up some? My surgeon office suggested seeing someone for pain management, and I might do it, but I doubt that is covered by my insurance. I know this sounds crazy, but sometimes I wish I never had this surgery. Anyway, if anyone can offer any hope or some further suggestions, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your time. Lindy

Pain at the top of incision; 7 weeks after surgery

My hubby is having pain (burning, can't stand to have his shirt touch) on the top 2 inches or so of his incision. Is that normal? He has an appointment with his cardiologist in 2 weeks, but I was wondering if any of you had experience with that. Thanks, Cindy in North Carolina

FIVE FOODS THAT PREVENT HEART ATTACKS

2008-12-21 09:36:40

Five Foods Prevent Heart Attacks Hi everyone. I've been on a mission in Texas but am back home now. I just found this interesting article about preventing heart disease. Wish I'd have seen it years ago but perhaps I wouldn't have taken it as seriously then. Also, does anyone have a list of what foods act as natural diuretics? I've about quit salt but my feet still swell a lot. Every other day I take diuretics along with potassium that the doctor prescribed, but I'd like to quit that if possible. Thanks. Kay Lee Cardiovascular disease is Americans top killer, but five foods have been proven to prevent heart attacks. While its well-known that a diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and low in saturated animal fats, lowers the risk of heart disease, these five foods go a step further. Bonnie T. Jortberg, Registered Dietician and senior instructor in the department of family medicine at University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, told Bottom Line/Personal that these five super heart-healthy foods have been shown to be particularly effective in preventing heart disease. The five foods proven to fight cardiovascular disease are: 1. Spinach Spinach is high in folate which helps prevent the accumulation of homoscysteine in the blood. Homoscysteine is a major risk factor for heart disease. 2. Salmon Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation and help prevent plaque from blocking arteries. 3. Tomatoes Tomatoes are rich in lycopene which lowers cholesterol. 4. Oatmeal Oatmeal is a great source of soluble fiber which absorbs excess cholesterol and removes it from your body. 5. Pomegranates Pomegranates are rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that keep hearts healthy by neutralizing cell-damaging free radicals, and may also reduce LDL bad cholesterol. Hello there, I just started getting faint achiness in my hands, wrist, elbow, shoulder, and toes, especially when I walk. I had a triple bypass 3 years ago.

Seat belts - "Shudder"

2008-12-20 07:01:00

Oh boy seat belts. I do remember that. I had to ride in the backseat for weeks. Whenever I rode in the car I took my heart pillow with me and used that as a pad between me and the seatbelt. For those who don't know what a heart pillow is it is exactly like it sounds. A heart shaped pillow given to me by the hospital. I used it when I had to cough, sneeze or burp for those first few weeks. It helped to stablize my sternum until it healed. That pillow and I became real good friends. There were nights I held it closer than I did my wife. The Captain

Introduction and question

2008-12-19 20:58:57

Hi! I just joined this group today. I am seven weeks post surgery from a quadruple by-pass. I have a question that I hope this group can help me with. I am sure this question has been asked many times and I did quickly checked the arcives, but with 4 young children at home, I always going from one thing to another. Please forgive me if this is a bother. My biggest physical problem I am having is the nerve pain from the surgery. My left breast is half numb and both breasts are soooo sensitve. I can't stand my shirt laying on my chest. Is this common and will it ever get better? I am off Percocet now and am trying just to take Excedrin to help relieve the pain, but am discourged that this pain will last forever. My doctor says the numbness should go away, and in all honesty I could live with the numbess, but I am finding my chest being so sensitive is driving me crazy. Can anyone offer hope or some suggestion to help with the pain? Thank you so much for your time. Lindy

8 years and many more.

2008-12-19 09:41:23

Connie, The 8 years is if you do nothing and most of us do take our statin drugs and aspirin everyday. Also just eating things that are better for us helps some. The heart surgeon I had said with the newer statin drugs some of his patients were living 20+ years and he did about 20% of his patients a second time and used to do well over half of them. So maybe you doctor just wants you to be aware of the worse case scenario, not good but perhaps honest. The surgeon did tell me that he could guarantee 6 to 8 years if I did nothing but the surgery. My husband was in tears at the time as I was considering not having the surgery at all so I guess he was trying to get me to give him at least that much more time. Then he said with the new statin drugs you might not even die from heart disease but something else. My father-in-law is 91 and had bypass 11 years ago and does not take aspirin and is diabetic. He now has alzheimer's and I think heart disease would be preferable. He looks good but can't even remember his children and always wants to know why he is still here. I knew a lady in El Paso who had heart bypass in her 70's and she passed away two years ago at 97. She did have a heart failure by then but hey, 97 is on up there. Here's to a long and happy life. Hey gang, I had 3XCABG on 11/13/03 and I have found that there are more important things in life than petty squabbles. This includes who is doing what to whom. Life is short, family, friends and loved ones are precious. Money, jealousy, etc aren't a big deal as long as you can live each day to the utmost. I play golf, do yard work, and everything else I would have been able to before the surgery and more. It was tough for a few months, but now I go the the Y 6 days a week and spent 1 - 1 1/2 hrs a day on the equipment. I can't lose weight but feel great otherwise. I enjoy every day and every person I meet. Think about it... OH btw.. I am also a cancer survivor of 9 yrs. ken

Folks, Take you personal problems elsewhere. This is a group for people to support each other before, during and after bypass surgery. Not to discuss love lives, who is cheating on who, and who is doing what. If you wish to discuss these thing do so privately so the rest of us don't have to read it. In other words take it somewhere else! The Captain.

My introduction

2008-12-18 07:00:58

Hello..My name is Danny Todd.I am 53 years old. 54 on Christmas Day. I live in Canberra, Australia. I was operated on (CABG x 3) at the Canberra Hospital on the 21st of August 2007. I had been sick for the last 4 years gradually becoming more run down.To cut a long story short the doctors I had seen during these 4 years were treating me for ulcer and or gall bladder inflammation. I had a colonoscopy, gastroscopy and scans of every organ in my abdomen. But during this time no one ever thought of giving me an ECG.I even had my drivers licence taken off me for 6 weeks when my blood pressure hit the 200 mark When it came back down after medication they gave my licence back to me but still no one thought of giving me a ECG or a stress test or any similar investigative procedure. In the end my hands and feet were blue and I was just tired all the time. On the 20th of July I was back at the doctors. I had been in agony for 16 days. I had been to 4 doctors during this time. Blood tests etc etc but everything was normal and they just kept trying different anti gastric medication. I thought I was going crazy. I even asked the doctor did he think I was turning into a hypochondriac and asked him should I go to the hospital. He told me not to panic and go running to the ER because they were very busy there and that they were doing all they could for me. Anyway as I was leaving he asked me if I had ever had an ECG. I said no and even then I believed that I didn't need one but I did have it as well as the blood test they do and went home thinking it would come back normal....the same as every other test that I had had. I got a call from the doctor later that morning and he told me that I had suffered a heart attack in the last few days and that I should get myself to the hospital straight away. Thank God for oxygen!..only a minute or 2 after they put me on the oxygen my pain went away and it hasn't been back since. I was admitted to the coronary care unit where they did an angiogram. Everyone was telling me that they would put a stent in and I could go home the next day..wrong!! They found 3 severe blockages (70% in 2..50% in the other) I was sent home to wait for my operation which was scheduled for the 14th of August. I made it as far as the operating theatre, just about to be anaesthetised when they cancelled me due to an emergency case. I thought they were joking! I didn't believe they could do that to anyone..but they did. They sent me home for another weeks wait and I was finally done on the 21st. I was in hospital for 6 days. I would have been out a couple of days earlier but I had 7 hours of Atrial Fibrillation (200 beats p/min) and they wanted me to stay for 24 hours after my heart went back to normal . I wanted to stay too.It was pretty scary! Anyway now I am at home feeling much better. I am walking 2 kms 5 days a week plus 2 days a week at the hospital in the cardiac Rehab program. The doctors are reducing my medication each week , my BP is 120/70 and my brain seems to be returning to normal..slowly. That is part of my story..I look forward to talking to some of you and discussing our personal experiences. I know that I already feel better having written this letter. My daughter said I sounded like I had post traumatic stress syndrome and after thinking about it I think that she is right. Take care Danny

Quiting smoking

2008-12-17 11:39:10

Everyone knows how bad smoking is for you and how badley it smells. I tried many many times to quit and really couldn't for long. Right before My bypass a friend told Me about this new medication that helps quit smoking. So the day of My bypass I threw out My cigarettes and started the med and guess what? I haven't smoked since. Its called Chantix. My sister has also quit using it. I highly recomend it to everyone I come in contact with. Just thought I woud share if anyone is facing quitting. Monica

Two months!

2008-12-17 05:47:15

It's two months today! It's amazing the difference that two months can make. I never would have believed that in only two months I'd feel this good. I start cardiac rehab tomorrow and I've been told that I only really need to do like 18 visits. My incision finally healed but is still sore and even so I feel incredible. So to anyone that's just starting on this wild ride hang in there, it really does get better. Also, thank you to the rest of you that replied/answered my questions that I'm sure had been asked like a million times before. This is a great place and I'm glad I found it.

Stopping Pain Medication

2008-12-17 01:52:05

I am now into my third week after cabgx3 and still find it necessary to take Tylenol 1 almost every 4 hours to get pain relief. I stopped the stronger meds as they were bunging me up. When do you think I can ease up on the Tylenol or should I just stop and tough it out. I just turned 69 and want to get active again but the pain is slowing me down too much.

Digest Number 2516

2008-12-17 01:14:20

Pacemaker. I had mine removed the day I went home. It was turned off when I left the recovery and went to the other room but I guess they forgot or just wanted to leave it until I was released. I was in the regular room for 2 days before I went home. I also had the 3 tubes and they did not hurt at all when they took them out the next day. I had my surgery in the evening so I didn't get out of recovery until the next afternoon about 6 p.m. The only tube they removed in recovery was the breathing tube and that did not hurt. I had an A-fib thingy and 4 units of blood after the surgery so I did have a rough night and day as they did not notice that I did not have enough blood until the A-fib and then they got all excited and I had 3 or 4 strangers standing over me trying to fix me. Still do not really know what it was just that I thought it was what you felt like when you were dying as everything was fuzzy and they all seemed to be talking funny and just staring at me. I did realize that the expressions on their faces were concerning as they seemed very worried. The next morning about 10 a.m. they finally let my husband see me and told him I was doing good and that I had a minor incident about midnight but I was fine now. I was very mad at them for making light of it as I had been trying to get them to call him for hours and then I found out he was in the waiting room all night and had no idea that I was having problems. I don't like hospitals or the staff and sure don't want anymore surgery. I can't believe you had bypass twice. I would probably drop dead if they told me I needed surgery again. You are a brave person and poof that you can survive this more than once. It was just awful to me and I wished I had never agreed to it. It's been 5 years now and I still get upset just thinking about it. It does help to talk about it I guess and most of the time I really don't think much about it. Just that one time a year when I have to go get my cardiology check and I almost start shaking just thinking about it. What a baby, huh!! Ann

chest tubes?

2008-12-16 09:58:54

I have another question, and this is gonna sound stupid Im sure. Those chest tubes...........does anyone know "where" they go inside? My mom had 2 of them....1 for draining after the surgery, and then there was another next to it when, after being on the ventilator for so long after the surgery she had a partially collapsed lung. Anyway, the other night she was complaining of a sharp, burning pain, like a charlie horse.....it would come and go. She said she thought that it felt like a stitch pulled out or was maybe getting hung up in the blanket and being yanked. She showed me exactly where it was hurting and asked if there was anything there......it wasnt anywhere near the chest stitches. It was sorta right next to the one hole/spot where the chestdrain tube was. She said sometimes she would feel it on the other side.....that was not as close to, but near the other spot where the tube for the lung was. She said she wasnt moving around, didnt try to lay on her side or anything, she was just laying flat on her back like she has been and this sharp burning pain hit.....then went away, then hit on the other side....then went away. The pain pills did nothing at all for it. A little while later however we think we figured out what it was since pulse and bp were fine..........gas. She started belching a lot. So, we thought Ok, gas pains, gas expanding and maybe putting pressure on whatever those 2 tubes have tore up on thier way in and out. We were trying to figure out WHERE those tubes go. We are guessing that they dont just stick in and thats it, they must stick them in and then run them somewhere in the body.......closer to the area where the surgery was done.......closer to the lung that collapsed. Does that sound plausible to anyone here? Has anyone ever had that happen? Gas moving around causing some bloating which would push/pull or whatever on the insides that have been traumatized? She hasnt had another issue like that, just that little while the other night and once she sat up, walked around the house a bit and started belching, it all went away. Thanks, Karen

heart spasms? chest pain after cabg x5

2008-12-16 03:52:08

My hubby had a cabg x5 a month ago. We've had him back to the ER twice now. the first time, the pain was more under his ribcage and diaphram area. It was relieved by a "GI Cocktail". Then 4am Sat, he wakes up with pain under his left arm. Since we deal with VA, I called their triage 24 nurse and gave him nitro x3 (every 5minutes as ordered) Took the pain down to about 3-4. On their advice, took him to ER. They inturn took him by ambulance back to the hosp. where he had the surgery. They did EKG, echo, chest xray, lab (cardiac enzyme). Nothing. Very slight difference in EKG .. throwing a few PVC's but not enough to warrant another cath. Has anyone else had this kind of pain? Is it similar to phantom pain as in amputation cases? We just got home an hour ago with no real answer. That's frustrating. Makes us both feel like we're being paranoid. Especially me, I used to be an LPN 10 yrs ago but when it comes to my family, all medical knowledge flies out the window. Any suggestions on how to handle this? Don't want to take a chance and not react to something we should react to. Does that make sense? lol Like I said, I was just wondering if anybody has had this or knows any thing about it. Thanks for listening. Kathy

panic attacks?

2008-12-15 21:54:45

I have another question.............are panic attacks "normal" or common???? theres times where my mom will get real nervous/worried/etc......like a panic attack. Shes on Paxil and I thought that would help things like that, but I dunno. Im not even sure how a panic attack is related to heart surgery. thanks, Karen

Has Anyone Ever?......

I had A CABG done in 2005. Because of complications I know suffer from Congestive Heart Failure. Is there anyone else who deals with this sitution? I am looking for someone who knows what I am going through and can help me deal with all of this at a "young age". I am only 35.

More re Shrimp

2008-12-15 09:53:35

Why don't package labels distinguish between good and bad cholesterol? The cholesterol that we eat is simply cholesterolyou can't consume "good cholesterol." Dietary cholesterol comes only from animal products such as meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. The amount of cholesterol you consume affects the amount your body produces, which is also affected by genetic factors. But saturated fats, found chiefly in animal products, affect blood cholesterol levels even more than dietary cholesterol itself. I've heard it's okay to eat eggs. The WELLNESS LETTER has said shrimp is okay. Both these foods are rich in cholesterol, so why are they okay? It all depends on how much of these foods you eat and in what contextand what your personal risk factors are. One egg contains about 215 milligrams of cholesterol; the recommended daily maximum is 300 milligrams. Thus, as we discussed in January, it would be okay to eat an egg if the other foods you eat that day are low in cholesterol. Shrimp contain more cholesterol than most shellfish (175 milligrams in 3 ounces)but, like eggs, they are low in saturated fat, and shrimp, in moderate amounts, have a place in a heart-healthy diet. The American Heart Association suggests a weekly maximum of four eggs for healthy people, including eggs consumed in baked goods and other recipes. If you love eggs and are at low risk for heart disease, you might want to eat more than four. But you should make sure, via periodic blood tests, that your cholesterol level doesn't shoot up. On the other hand, if your blood cholesterol is high or if you have other risk factors for heart disease or already have heart disease, you should probably follow a more stringent diet, avoiding foods high in cholesterol and saturated fat.

Shrimp?

2008-12-15 04:36:25

Hey Pops, I LOVE shrimp, and am also being treated for familial hypercholesterolemia so your question intrigued me. For what it's worth here's this: How Shrimp Drains "Bad" Cholesterol From Your Blood? Published on April 9, 2002 [INLINE] Health-conscious Consumers are concerned about the cholesterol content of foods such as meat, eggs, and dairy products. In the case of shrimp, however, the cholesterol story is different. Research has shown that the high percentage of "good fats" in shrimp reduces the impact of cholesterol. Most people can eat shrimp as part of a balanced diet. "Good" Cholesterol, "Bad" Cholesterol Cholesterol travels through the blood stream in lipoproteins, which have been referred to as "plump little fat and protein packages." A positive ratio between two types of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), reduces susceptibility to heart disease. [INLINE] LDL is known as "bad cholesterol" because it may promote production of artery-blocking plaques that can result in a heart attack. HDL is called "good cholesterol" because it returns cholesterol back to the liver for reprocessing of excretion, which reduces cholesterol levels in the blood stream. Shrimp and Dietary Cholesterol Cholesterol from food has a negative impact only if it is absorbed, and saturated fat seems to assist absorption. Eating food with a highly saturated fat content raises LDL cholesterol. Most high-cholesterol foods (such as meat, eggs, and dairy products) are also high in saturated fat, and increase LDL. Shrimp have a high level of cholesterol, but have essentially no saturated fat (slightly over I gram per serving, compared to beef, which can have 10 to 20 grams). And shrimp's cholesterol is harder to absorb than that from other high-fat foods, although the reasons are not known. In the past, scientists could not differentiate the different sterols and measured them all as "cholesterol". This is why the amount of cholesterol in shrimp and other shellfish reported is very high. We now know that the amount of cholesterol in shrimp is approximately 130 mg per 3 oz of raw shrimp, or about 12 large shrimp, and with only 2 grams of fat. The amount of cholesterol in a comparable portion of regular ground beef is about 110 mg, with approximately 20 grams of fat. And shrimp have high levels of beneficial highly unsaturated fatty acids, which raise HDL cholesterol levels, so eating shrimp may actually lower blood cholesterol levels. The Rockefeller University Study A study performed in the mid 1990s at Rockefeller University (New York, USA) concluded that eating steamed shrimp raised blood cholesterol levels when compared with a low-cholesterol diet. However, the shrimp diet raised levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol) more than it increased levels of LDL (the "bad" cholesterol"), and the resulting HDL to LDL ratio was favorable. Triglycerides were also lower on this diet when compared to an egg-based diet with equal amounts of cholesterol. [INLINE] Conclusion A serving of a dozen large shrimp contains 130 mg of cholesterol. This is not a health concern, because shrimp is low-fat with a rich content of highly unsaturated fatty acids, which lead to the formation of high-density lipids, commonly known as "good cholesterol". Consuming shrimp may actually lower blood cholesterol levels. Scientists have concluded that a healthy diet can include shrimp, boiled or broiled. As with most foods, it is better to avoid deep-frying, and to limit the amount of oil, butter, tartar sauce, and mayonnaise. Source: Thai Frozen Foods Association Jennifer in Los Alamitos, CA

2008-12-14 19:47:15

Hey there, i havent posted to this site in a while.but i still read everything.I learn from it.This site has helped me deal with my husbands issues too. He too had a triple by-pass when he was 49, he now is 51. He was also a smoker and drinker, he takes his meds reagular but hasnt qiut smoking or drinking. Its like he doesnt want any help. They also put him on total dissability, because he has really bad clogging of the arterys(athersclerosis), his legs is 90% clogged and still has several in his heart still. T he doctor told him last month that if he didnt quit smoking that they would remove his legs.Hes hardheaded and still wont quit, ive come to a conclusion that no matter what i try to help him with or the doctors, he is not going to do anyhing till hes ready and tries to help himself. So i just pray for him,and leave the rest up to god. god bless all of you. Tammy

ONE YEAR ON

2008-12-14 04:19:43

Hello again to fellow group members, one year on from my AVR & 1xCAB. I have not posted here for ages. Doing well. I still get the slight pulling sensations in my chest certain ways I lay, (one hopes it has all joined up together ok when feeling the scar site) and the numb feeling in the side of the breast remains (probably as good as it gets) No angina thankfully. I trust the aortic valve will serve me for many years to come. How are others feeling? I would be really interested to know how life is a year on for you and what you are experiencing at this stage of recovery. Marion (from England)

Early Cognitive Impairment Following Coron...

2008-12-13 23:26:54

This is true. My mom used to have the greatest memory. Now she gets days confused and can't remember things. She had her quad by-pass in April 2006. It took her a long, long time to stop hurting from the surgery and it took her leg a very long time to heal and her one leg still swells like a balloon. She wished she never had the surgery. She keeps asking me why she had to have it because she didn't have any symptoms. She just went in for a stress test and didn't pass. They couldn't put a stent in because of where the plaque was so the only option was by-pass. Of course they told her she was a walking time bomb and all that scary stuff. Who knows. She is still alive today but she is still weak and tired from the surgery. Cindy

Personality Changes

2008-12-13 19:56:43

One of his nurses described him as obnoxious, angry, uncooperative, combative, nasty, rude and annoying. Whoa, Gwen -- talk about venting how that nurse really felt! That description would have fit Wally in the hospital as well. He's normally quite a mellow fellow, but during his 34-day stay gave the staff a really hard time; one of the nurses finally lost her temper with him. She apologized to him later, but she told me confidentlally that in 30 years of nursing she'd never had a patient who caused her to "lose it" like that! Jennifer in Los Alamitos, CA

Not Elated?

2008-12-13 12:01:26

...and, as you say, it helps that we are a family but not elated. Dayton Well, I don't know about YOU, Dayton, but I'm elated every day that my Wally is still above the sod! Okay, okay, everyone -- I know that was a typo and he meant to say "related." It just tickled my funnybone and I couldn't help myself. Sorry. Jennifer in Los Alamitos

How Can I Help Him?

2008-12-13 10:19:54

Hello Everyone: I'm so glad I found this site. My husband had CABGx4 on July 27, 2007. Today is 1 month since the heart attack that sent us to the ER. David is 49 and has always been a "party guy". He's smoked for 30 years, loves his Captian Morgan and Coke and always felt he could eat pretty much what he wanted because he doesn't gain any weight. I feed him healthily, but he travels lots. On 6/29/2007 he had surgery to repair an inguinal hernia. Between 7/1 and 7/21 he had six "events" which we now know were heart attacks. We thought it was the CO2 they use in laproscopic surgery. NOT!!! He even had two doctors visits, one on 7/20, the day before the ER, and still wasn't diagnosed until we got to the ER. Anyway, he isn't walking. He's smoking a little bit and drinking a little bit also. My question is how can I help to motivate him. He doesn't want to talk and gets angry with me if I ask questions. He won't let me go to the doctor with him. It seems like he's just sitting around waiting for something to happen to make him better. Not proactive in his healing process at all!!! He's finally remembering to take his meds on his own, otherwise, they don't get taken unless I hand them to him. I know he's frustrated that he can't do much without getting tired and he said he's depressed. I'm about at my wits end with his nasty attitude and ugly remarks to me, but I keep praying and hoping he'll recover from this. Any suggestions??? Thanks for listening.... Gwen

Wire ?

Has anyone had to have the wires removed? I finally got to see my cardio doc and as soon as he saw that he hole at the top of the incision wasn't healed and one of the chest tube holes wasn't healed he told me that I wasn't allowed to start rehab nor drive until I was seen by a surgeon. (remember, had mine bypass on vacation on 7/16) so he sent me to a surgeon and the surgeon said that these holes should have been healed within ten days of surgery. So now he wants a CT scan of my chest to look for pockets of some kind, I guess to make sure that the wires aren't infected (even though the holes look good and not infected). He said sometimes the body rejects the wires and they have to be removed. Well, needless to say my brain is NOT wanting to hear that. So, my question is has anyone had to have the wires removed and is it as bad as my brain thinks? The very thought of them going back in makes me want to run and hide. Thanks, Val

newbie intro from a wife of recent 5x cabg

2008-12-12 20:08:27

Hi group. I'm new here and I can sure use some moral support from others who have gone thru this. My hubby had a mild MI on 7/31 and ended up with 7 blockages (3 over 95%) and 5 bypass surgery 2 days later. We've been home now for a week. I've already learned alot by reading previous posts. I'm an LPN but when it comes to this, my knowledge goes out the window (especially when it's my family). I know he needs to walk but what do we do when we live in a little town, out in the middle of no-where? No place a/c for him to walk. Closest Walmart is 35 miles away. It's been over 100 degrees almost every day he's been home. Our house is little so there isnt alot of area for him to walk. Closest mall is 3-4 hours away. Cardiac Rehab at the hosp consists of working with PT but right now, that isn't covered by the VA yet. Needless to say, money is a major concern. We own our own trucking company, and if he doesn't drive...no money comes in. Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling...guess I am. I've just got a lot of questions about his health, worries about his health, feelings of desertion from his kids and mine. (his son lives right next door to us and has only visited him twice since he's been home and my daughter lives 3 blocks away and hasn't even bothered to check on either one of us). Is it normal for them to be moody? and hot one minute and cold the next? I realize he must be feeling the same frustrations that I am. If any body has any suggestions or coping ideas, please let me know. I know I'm lucky to have him and I don't want to do anything to lose him. Thanks for listening and I again, I'm sorry for venting like this. Kathy NW Kansas

Give me a break!!

2008-12-12 14:11:42

Okay, don't know if any of you have this happening to you. We moved my daughter into her dorm for her first year of college yesterday. All I heard all day was don't lift that or don't do that. Give me a freaking break! It has been over 16 months since my surgery. I can outwalk and outwork anyone in my family and they freak if I attempt to lift anything over about 20 lbs. Not that I am all muscular or ever was but still, I can do things without worry. Maybe it is just the worry after my surgery. I had a near thing and maybe they are just reacting to that. I love my family but wish they would cut me some slack.

Eating in restaurants

2008-12-11 23:55:22

Hello all, I had 6 way bypass about a year ago and was told to maintain a rather low sodium (2100 mg/day) diet since I've run out of replacement arteries. I travel frequently as part of my job and luckily can manage to stay at hotels that have kitchens in the suite so I can prepare my own food. However I am often faced with clients who want to take me out to dinner in nice restaurants. So how have those of you similar diet restrictions handled going out to restaurants? Oh, for a good rack of lamb. Jack (6 CABG = 1 Cole Slaw)

Arm and shoulder ? from a newbie

2008-12-11 15:24:24

Hi all just wanted to say hello and say thanks already! I've only been in the group for like 10 minutes and have done a little search of previous posts and low and behold I've gotten some answers. For example, the pain and depression lightens up with time. Anyway, a quick note about myself....I'm a 41 year old female and I had my heart attack on vacation in Texas on July 16. I had a single off pump bypass where they got the artery from the cavity of my chest wall. Then, I got myself out of Texas and home to NJ ASAP. I haven't seen my cardio doc yet and have no idea of what to expect in/from rehab. My question to the group is this, Is it common to have extreme shoulder and arm pain when they use the artery from the chest cavity? It's my left arm and in no way does this pain resemble the pain that my heart attack gave me. Also, will I ever sleep through the night again? I can't wait to ask my new doc these question but I won't see him until Aug 20. Thanks in advance, V.

How do you handle stress?

2008-12-11 08:29:07

I know all of us handle stress in a different way. I firmly believe part of my problems were caused by the stress I was under. I own a real estate appraisal business. Things started to go bad a couple of years ago. Before that I had one client that really drove me hard and then dropped me for little to no reason. This one client was 30% of our total business. Things improved for awhile but now they have really turned bad. In the midst of all this I had to put my son in the hospital twice for major surgeries. One of these was emergency surgery. I am the only breadwinner of the home and thing got and still are very difficult. I made the decision a couple of weeks ago to close the business that I have had for nearly twenty years. I will have to give up the freedom of working for myself to work for someone else. I am currently looking a job. My daughter enters college this fall and my son is in his second year. I have a chance at a good job and I hope that I can get it. It would be a 40 min drive one way, but could double my pay. I work for my church to help relieve the stress of my life. I also write stories on the internet. This gives me some relief. I enjoy nature photography and spending time with my family. I hope all of you have a way to relieve stress. I was just curious as to what each of us do. Captainkodak1

CHELATION TREATMENT INLEU OF BYPASS/ANGIOPLASTY

2008-12-11 05:49:18

Lately 'CHALETION" treatment (Removal of blockages/plaque by a series of injections )is receiving a lot of encouragement/publicity.It is said to cost very little and is non-invasive.Having undergone a Bypass & an Angioplasty in the last 15 years I am not inclined to go in for any invasive procedure. Any comments-Any one??? p.d.desh.

Quintuple Bypass on 8/6/07

2008-12-10 22:30:34

Today my father underwent quintuple bypass when it was only supposed to be a triple bypass. His vitals were wonderful before and during surgery. However, now he has a fever of 104 and he cannot be roused from anesthesia. My mother was able to wake him by gently stroking his hand and calling his name, but the nurse quickly shooed her out of the ICU. Has anyone had a similar experience? We cannot find a doctor or an RN that will explain anything to us. Every time we ask they just tell us that he is stable. The RN who treated him lastnight told him that he would be given an anesthesia/amnesia drug he referred to as "Mothers Milk". Would anyone have anymore information about this? Thank you so much. My father is sixty years old and has never had any problems like this before.

Bypass and 39

2008-12-10 11:46:13

Hi, My name is Tommy I am a 39 Year old male. On June 15 I had to have emergency Quad Bypass surgery. It has been a tough recovery, especially psychologically. My mind thinks I'm okay but my body tells me otherwise. My personality seems to have changed. I seem to be always irritable, my wife and kids don't want me around. Please if there is someone out there who has been through this Please contact me. My Doctor tells me these feelings are normal, I have to disagree.

pool ?

2008-12-10 08:24:59

Hey Rose - how soon after surgery were you allowed in your pool - I can't get in my pool or hot tube - can't do much of anything. I'm not sure i didn't get the pool until a year after it but I know u are never allowed in a hot tub that is to hot that's why hotels have warnings about them and heart patients... I was well over a month in the hospital so I could take a shower when i came home.. my staples were already out most come home sooner then that ..I don't breathe well in the heat so the pool is a real enjoyment for me I cant tell its hot when I'm in it lol.. my husband is out building a deck for it so the kids can jump off it .. A milestone in my life.

2008-12-09 16:01:32

Over the past few days I have been doing something special. Yesterday I went rafting on the Shenandoah River. It was great. Today, I took a very nice hike. It was over 2 miles down the side of a mountain to see a waterfall. It was a mile one way and the altitude change was over 1000 feet in that mile. The trail had numerous switchbacks. I covered this trail in just a couple of hours and did not even get short of breath. I did put out some sweat but I was able to outwalk and outclimb my teenage son and daughter. I had quadruple heart bypass in April of 2006. Now I am in the best health I have ever been. The surgery was hard but I promised myself and my family that I would be there for them. I have worked hard to recover and this was just one more milestone in that recovery. Bypass is not the end of life, but a new beginning. Captainkodak1

Mad and Sad

2008-12-09 09:51:48

Hello everyone, Though I'm not an official member, my husband Wally joined the Zipper Club in October, 2006, and I dove into learning as much as I could about the "experience." OF COURSE it's natural to feel these emotions, and more! You can't get much closer to the Grim Reaper--it's terrifying. Nobody should be ashamed of their normal reactions to going through this surgery, or put anyone else down for admitting to the same. Just my humble opinion. Jennifer in Los Alamitos, CA

Blood for lab tests.

2008-12-08 21:31:34

Boy oh boy, Had to get my bloods drawn for my cholesterol and for liver function today. Of course I could not eat until after the tests, so I was already hungry. Then they started probing and I do mean probing for a vein in my right arm. They worked around in there for what seemed like forever until they pulled out. They started to work on my left hand. Well after getting one tube less they a quarter full, they had to play around with it again and blew the vein. Sooooo, onto the right hand. Miracles of miracles, God was smiling on me and they finally got both vials full. I was one sore rascal for a good part of the day. Anyways, it was all for my own good, so I dealt with it. Take care, get your excercise and take your meds. Remember, bypass is not the end of the world, but the opening of a door to a new life, walk through the door and live it to the fullest. This is the Captain Over and out Right hand salute

One year and one month

Friends of zipper club: I have now completed 13 months of my 2X CABG. Went for the anniversary check up after having the blood work done. The heart Doc advised: 1. Medicines on time without any miss. 2. Restricted food habit. 3. Regular walking and exercise. A visit after an year shall suffice. Visited this site after long and it was nice seeing you. Subir

Diabeties

2008-12-07 12:30:15

Hi again. This is Ann. I learned during my hospital stay that my biabeties (type 2) is way out of control. Dr. says that is common nd hopefully the insulin meds I'm on will help turn things around. I had gained 50lbs before surgery due to stress, stopped smoking and ate lots and lots of junk food. So far I have lost 25lbs since returning home. I'm really working hard not to eat sugars is access but with depression and alot of chest pains it not easy. In a previous post I mentioned the injections I had to have for unfamation in my rib cartlidge--well I saw my cardio dr yesterday because the pain was back worse then ever. He prescribed 3 new meds to help me through this. He said there is also nerve damage and it will take some time to heal. Is anyone else experiencing these problems? I know I am feeling sorry for myself but it seem like the pain override any logic thought I might have. Any suggestions on how to get though this phasse of recovery?? Ann

Response received

2008-12-05 18:16:49

Thank you all for your responses to my email. You are right, the surgery date was June 12th. And I guess, all in all I am doing great. It is sometimes hard to see that through this recovery--and nothing to compare it too. Reading the postings for all your experiences has helped to give me some idea of what to expect--and what still lies ahead. I will continue to push myself to increase my breathing and walking to encourage faster healing. Thank you again. Keep posting. Ann

Post Bypass Surgery

2008-12-05 09:13:23

Hi, This is my first time posting on this message board and am anxious to hear from others re:their surgeries and post experiences. My surgery was July 12th, released from hosp. July 17th. I am having problems with the tube incisions healing--all three sites continue to bleed and drain. The location is very awkward as my bra sits on top to the incisions. It is necessary to wear the bra for the additional support to help relieve some of the chest pain. Any suggestions how to help these areas heal. Also, I have been experiencing mild to severe pain from my chest incision to under my right arm. Yesterday the pain moved to include the area from under my left arm, across the sternman, to under the right arm. I saw my surgeon today for my first follow-up and he said this is from inflamation of the rib cartlige and injected steriods into severe pain areas. After 7 injections the pain did subside and I could take a deep breath without pain. However, 2 hours later the pain began to return in some of the areas. Has anyone else experienced this type of pain and what do you do to help relieve it? How do you cope with the recurring depression and limitations on activity? How does your families cope with your inability to do the things you used to do? My activities are still restricted for the next 4 weeks. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences with me. Ann

Up And Coming Surgery Valve Choice

2008-12-05 03:27:33

Well, I just came from the surgeons office and I go in for my cath 7/11 - surgery is set for 7/12 - it's best not to wait any longer. I do have a question for every and anyone who may have had an arotic valve replaced - I am 62, should I get the mechanical or pig/cow valve? Also, did anyone have there arotic valve replaced and did they have the arteries checked in their neck to find they had 55-65 percent blockage?

49 yr old husband had 4 bypasses in Jan.

2008-12-05 01:38:32

My husband had the burping and heart burn. He thought he was getting asthma. He did not have a heart attack but had 12 blockages and ended up having 4 bypasses. That was almost 7 months ago. He has lost alot of weight but has changed in his behavior. He doesnt smile anymore, and is not sure whre he belongs. We have been married 20 years last month and he is going through depression, midlife crisis or something to that effect. He is also back to using his smokeless tobacco on a regular basis. Has anyone had this experience with their husbands after surgery?

My father's Confusion

2008-12-05 01:29:16

We're at 6 days after my fathers quintuple bypass and he still has episodes of confusion. Sometimes he seems very good, other times he makes statements that lack reality. Can anybody give me some idea of how long this may last? Although the doctors have prepared us for the long recovery, I need to sooth my mothers nerves (mine also). Just looking for some encouragement. Thank you so much! - Michael

I have just learned I need a Aortic Valve Replacement for Arotic Stenosis. I have my Heart Cath on 7/11 and I was ubruptly told I would not leave the hosplital I would remain and have the surgery immediately following the cath. Well, I want to tell you - I went in to a panic attack. I had no idea what hospital I would be going to nor did I have a surgeon. The Cath Doctor sent in his assistant after he was thru and he told me the surgeons name and place. I asked to have some time to think about this as ask a few more questions. I had an appointment with my General Doc that after noon and she set things straight. I will get to meet the surgeon prior to the surgery on 7/5. I did find out the hospital is one of the 5 best in the nation for heart surgery and the doctor is rated extremely high by his peers. I have been reading what will happen and what is expected but I am scared to death and a nervous wreck. I have so few people to speak with regarding this operation - My son, my friends all have their own lives and I am alone. I just need more reassurance with regard to this operation and the outcome. I'm so scared I don't know what to say to anyone or what to ask. Is there anyone in this support group who has had this operation and can chat with me.?

selecting a surgeon

2008-12-04 05:28:42

Perhaps this is not an appropriate subject here since the listers seem to be post surgery but I would be interested in how you selected your surgeon. I was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation, had the nuclear stress test, two echo tests, tread mill stress test. After all that I had a cath of both right and left side of my heart which located blockage to the LAD in two places. I am in south central Wisconsin and already talk to the head of the cardiac surgery here. I have an appointment of Friday for an evaluation at Mayo clinic. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mary Jo
